peoplebrowsr-logo

Ever wondered how to search the Bio fields for someone in Twitter? How to search Twitter profiles? Peoplebrowsr is the only surefire way I’ve found. I think there are some directories, but first, people have to know about them, and two, register.

Go to Peoplebrowsr and log in using your Peoplebrowsr account, or Twitter account or any other account. Then

pb-numbers

  1. Type in World of Warcraft, your bank, social media guru whatever. Hit the OPTIONS button, not the magnifying glass
  2. a subwindow will be created – something like what you see in Tweetgrid and others.
  3. click on the name – in my case @dhollinger – it’s kinda greyed out on my monitor but it might be alright on yours.
  4. Popup window, make sure Profile (top left) is active and you will see where your keyword appeared in their profile.
  5. Be careful. I had “hate Real Estate” for a while, just to see the bots auto-joining me looking for “real estate” in profiles. Heh. Nothing to do with Peoplebrowsr search though.

Did this help? I mean, I’ve always wanted to find people in particular industries or at companies or whatevs, but maybe you don’t use Twitter that way?  By the way Peoplebrowsr does lots of other cool things. You might like to see how it aggregates accounts of friends for example, merging the friend element of some social networks with the stranger element of online communities. Interesting proposition.

Disclaimer: in the far distant past I worked a little with the Peoplebrowsr team. But I happen to genuinely think being able to search Twitter bios is cool, and haven’t found another way of doing it except maybe directories like Twellow.

One of those dumbass things you notice – Blizzard, makers of World of Warcraft does not have RSS turned on their official press release/media site. This means that instead of being able to subscribe to their news in say my.yahoo or igoogle, you have to go to the site and check for new news. None there? Try back again tomorrow, and tomorrow and tomorrow. I’m always coming across companies not having RSS turned on their press releases – gosh, most of them publish a PDF file, and expect you to open it. But does one expect it from a MMORPG Continue Reading…

I was trying to navigate my way around my blog – which had turned to Arabic menus at the top – and accidentally flagged it as having “objectionable content”. Now, I’m not the best blogger in the world, but I doubt I shoulda flagged my own blog as bad ‘un. I’ve since turned the blog back into english – see below- but it won’t unflag. Annoying… So I thought I’d write a post in case anyone gets stuck overseas and their settings for ‘English’ don’t hold. Ummm Google? dear? Just because I am in Saudi Arabia doesn’t mean I suddenly Continue Reading…

It might be hard to see, but the first line of when I did the Google search -oh ok, a vanity search – on “laurel papworth” is a sponsored ad (slightly yellowed). In this case, perhaps IIR (an event management agency) have linked their database of past speakers (I chaired an Enterprise 2.0 conference last year) to Google Ads? Or has it read my post previously and linked me to ‘em? So I expect to see in the future, other unSocial Ads: www.pottspointbooze.com.au Buy the same cheap-ass beer as Laurel Papworthwww.carsales.com.au Buy the same crapheap car as Laurel Papworthwww.woolworths.com.au Buy Continue Reading…

… right at this minute. I get more questions answered on Twitter, don’t like their attitude to discussion ( hint: turning off comments on corporate blogs and YouTube video channels grumps me out), and thought they were being smarty pants when Google said they would never get involved in social networks. The promptly turned around and got involved with Orkut and OpenId and recently OpenSocial. But Google Custom Search is kinda interesting re: social search and all might be forgiven. It seems to be people manually creating a link list (or ‘blogroll’) which is then searchable. For exampleHe’s listed 34 sites Continue Reading…

Welcome home darling, how was your day at the cube farm? Bit of a discussion in today’s Sydney Morning Herald (Oct 27-28, page 3 MyCareer) about putting hobbies on job applications. (You go find the linkety link). I blame the education system for this kind of nonsense. Howard Rheingold said it so well at eduau2007 – We teach kids how to sit still all day, only moving when the bell rings, so they are assimiliated as good and obedient little battery hens.. errr workers: Here’s a bit of that article from the Sydney Morning Herald who spoke with Morgan McKinley Continue Reading…

Those poor darlings at ADMA had to sit and listen to me waffle on about how Web 2.0 social media, social news, social bookmarking and social search were going to change their world. As they hadn’t yet learnt about Search Engine Optimisation (also, apparently, called Search Engine Marketing), and as social search is not yet an exact science, it was a fun exploration. Hitwise is on board: Traffic from social networking websites influences Singaporean appliance and electronics shopping online Posted: 09 Oct 2007 06:26 PM CDT According to Hitwise Singapore, for the week ending October 9, 2007, while search engines Continue Reading…

Slicing and Dicing Social Networks – This should give you some ammo to get Facebook unbanned at work. And start to build a business case for maximising the network. A few cool social networks analytics apps are appearing on Facebook, stealer of souls and jobs. Socialistics, Interactive Friends Chart and Friend Wheel are three. Socialistics mashes up your community into visual representations (tag cloud, pie charts) to help you better understand you (and your friends) networks. Huge potential here. We’ll see more Company networks- probably closed, must use company email address to join – who apply Socialistics. The only thing Continue Reading…

Anyone here use Facebook? *poke* poke* From Ad Age: 23-Year-Old Mark Zuckerberg Has Google Sweating Idealist Entrepreneur’s Facebook Offers Something Search Doesn’t–Distribution By Abbey Klaassen Just as Google has become what some people call the operating system for search, Facebook is turning itself into the operating system for social networking. While Google knows what millions of people are searching for, Facebook has something the search giant hasn’t been able to grow: a network of connections between people that creates a viral distribution platform unrivaled by any portal or search engine. In late May, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the social Continue Reading…

I’ve been wandering the seedy underbelly of *flipping* sites. This is where someone builds a site, with affiliate marketing and ads and stuff, builds traffic to the site then sells it. Typically used for spamming – for example, create a tonne of domains called MySpaceFriends, FriendsMySpace, MyFriendsSpace and they are all basically the same, linking to each other, sharing the Google Juice and all sorts of clever reasons why. But at first glance this TagsPage site looked sorta genuine. Problem is, I can’t see the purpose. Why would someone come to a tagspage for a spam-tag search. Whats spam tagging Continue Reading…

(or: Social Media Optimisation versus Search Engine Optimisation)I blundered in on a private tiff over at ACP Mags “Geek Gear” site. It was about SEO optimisation. Note that Geek Gear hasn’t translocated (is that the right word?) their URLs/pathnames from a node number to words that are Google Juice friendly. One of the commenters aggressively pointed out that Geek Gear are n00bs at SEO. Which is probably fair as they were just talking about their first jaunt into optimising their site. I doubt they are going into practice any time soon as SEO gurus, blackhat or otherwise. This commenter did Continue Reading…
