Hot off the press from Asher Moses at Sydney Morning Herald.

Web censorship plan heads towards a dead end

The Government’s plan to introduce mandatory internet censorship has effectively been scuttled, following an independent senator’s decision to join the Greens and Opposition in blocking any legislation required to get the scheme started.

*grabs Asher and starts dancing a jig* w00t!  Twitter is a’rockin’ at the moment.

PS no  image cos Fairfax get wierded out by us driving traffic to their site…

Ever wondered how to search the Bio fields for someone in Twitter? How to search Twitter profiles? Peoplebrowsr is the only surefire way I’ve found. I think there are some directories, but first, people have to know about them, and two, register. Go to Peoplebrowsr and log in using your Peoplebrowsr account, or Twitter account or any other account. Then Type in World of Warcraft, your bank, social media guru whatever. Hit the OPTIONS button, not the magnifying glass a subwindow will be created – something like what you see in Tweetgrid and others. click on the name – in Continue Reading…

Q. What are social network leaderboards? A. They are a list of members and content, a way of finding cool stuff, a reward system for members, a tribe unto themselves, an enforcer of good behaviour, marketing device to find influencers. Anything more? Leaderboards are lists A leaderboard is a list. The most of something, or the best (quantity or quality). The most posts on a forum, the most friends, the most Diggs. Or, the best as voted by 10,000 members that sort of thing, the funniest member, the best staff member. A directory of most viewed content, most rated videos, Continue Reading…

Who are Australia’s top marketing and media bloggers? Not decided by the local BlogMafia -heh – but internationally recognised and independently evaluated? This is the list. Again. Six months on. My original blog post, exactly six months ago. Where are we up to? For Lee Hopkins, who asked today on Twitter about getting access to an updated Top Marketing and Media bloggers list for Australia. As you can see, their ranking in Australia is left column, then the blog name, their ranking in August last year, their ranking today, and for fun, their Twitter ID if I have it handy. Continue Reading…

People play shoot the messenger while I try to document the demise of heritage media. So let me put a target HERE on Vex News for you to aim at: The publisher of left-wing newspaper The Age, Fairfax Media is on the verge of financial meltdown after announcing a $365 million net loss for the first half of the financial year. The company was forced to slash $447.5 million from its balance sheet valuations of the businesses they own, including dubiously over-valued assets like The Age’s masthead. “They’ve borrowed many millions on The Age and (Sydney Morning) Herald’s mastheads, which Continue Reading…

A press release I did through Porter Novelli/3 Mobile got picked up in Queensland: Facebook and other social sites banned by many bosses AUSTRALIAN bosses are more straitlaced than their European counterparts when it comes to allowing access to social networking websites. An online survey of 1000 Australian employees found 55 per cent said their boss had banned sites such as Facebook and MySpace. This compared with similar bans on 20 per cent of workers in Britain, 12 per cent in France, 11 per cent in Spain, 10 per cent in Germany and 6 per cent in Italy. The online poll, by 3 Mobile Australia last Continue Reading…

Tonight is the Academy Awards night. Which is odd, because it’s usually around my birthday – March 24th. Do you know how annoying it is to invite people over for a birthday party and they keep wanting to turn the music off and turn the telly on? I’m emotionally scarred for life. Anyway, this is a post I’ve been wanting to write for a while. There are a small group of cinema chains in Australia: Academy Hoyts Greater Union, also Birch Carroll and Coyle Village In the 1980s Australia had 712 screens. This increased massively during the 90s. But nowadays Continue Reading…

I think part of the disintermediation of communication means that it becomes much easier to catch the eye and ear of an individual. Whether they be the CEO of an Australian company, Malcolm Turnbull on Twitter or a celebrity like Stephen Fry, on services like Twitter you can find a way to engage with them. Fry is the global heavyweight of Twitter, with 200,000 active followers – more than any other, including US president Barack Obama. He has blacked out his Twitter photo avatar and changed his biography to read: “I’m blacked out: Stand up against “Guilt Upon Accusation” for Continue Reading…

I think that one of the issues that David Galbally, QC and other lawyers of his ilk is that because they don’t understand social media, they don’t understand where it’s going. So calls to turn Facebook off in Victoria or to insist Facebook removes photots and videos and material relating to alleged suspects is niave at best. Irrespective what the courts say. Everyone had an opinion on what I should’ve said during the 7 minute piece in which I got about 3 minutes   Including: people can bypass with proxies, they will use other services and so on. But it Continue Reading…

EDIT: Added The Channel 7  Sunrise Video: Thanks Ben Novakovic for uploading to YouTube (@bmn) Note the 5 min mark – did he really say shut down internet services in Victoria when a court case is on? Just Facebook or all internet social sites? All court cases or just some? Or did I misunderstand – it really threw me at the time. I’m guesting on the Sunrise program on Channel 7 Australia tomorrow morning. Apparently with Mike Munroe and Mel someone? Not Kochie Anyway the show is about vigilantism (think: naming and shaming the alleged arsonist of the Victorian bushfires)  Continue Reading…

Ok these guys have worked it out. I love stories of social media hijacking channels for their own purpose. The story: Proposal 2.0 Michael Weiss-Malik, a Google employee, deserves a lot of credit for this one. What better way to show the world your love than displaying it on Google Maps? Weiss-Malik got his buddies on the Street View team to give him a heads-up on the next time the Street View car was coming out to take pictures. And when that day came, he was well-prepared, holding a banner that read “Proposal 2.0: Marry me Leslie!!” (see above) After Continue Reading…

Charlie Rose.com has this fascinating video. It starts with “I have a problem – it’s called ‘realism’” as a nice follow up to “micropayments will save us”. A conversation about the future of newspapers with Walter Isaacson of “Time,” Robert Thomson of “Wall Street Journal” and Mort Zuckerman of “” I’m off to do a presentation this afternoon. So sit there, be good and enjoy it. I’ll be back later.

Wherever the grandkids are, the grandparents follow. This is not a-typical. MySpace has been primarily women over 35 since 2005, and 11% of members there are senior citizens. Who has the highest disposable income, most free time and greatest need to connect with family and friends at a distance? Particularly keeping uptodate with young members who don’t come to visit enough? Grandparents. I know a few people who have connected their mothers (in their 70′s) to Twitter. It just takes time for the older generation to find out where the photos are being uploaded, lives being discussed, and they want Continue Reading…
