My attempt to scare marketeers into attending one of my web 2.0 social media courses. Did it work?

*advertisement coming up*
I teach a one day public course on how to create a social media marketing campaign. It’s on Friday 18th July at the University of Sydney, Centre for Continuing Education:

Course description:

Web 2.0 – Facebook, blogs and marketing
You probably already know a little of YouTube, Facebook, Flickr and del.icio.us. In this one-day course you’ll get a real taste of the marketing power of the new Web 2.0 services: blogs and wikis, user-generated content, citizen journalism and social software. We’ll look at case studies of customers creating ads and campaigns, how they distribute their content and how to monitor consumer discussions and reviews of your products. An interesting day spent exploring a dynamic and challenging area. No technical or prior knowledge required. (.pdf here)

Know any nubbies (newbie social marketers) who could/should attend? Send ‘em along… Step by step through creation, distribution and monitoring. Fun Fun Fun. They are really popular and fill up quick. (not that part isn’t a joke!)
*we now return you to your usual time wasting activities on the ‘net* Heh.

Synopsis. Cannes viral video award was won by Speed Undressing – and mightily pissed off the “client” JC Penney. Agency User Generated Content Anyone? (AUGC) I wrote earlier about Save Our Advertising: speak up, get with it, get engaged with the online community, connect. And I’m speaking to the advertising agencies themselves, not their clients. From Opinionopolis: As someone who works in advertising, and has worked in advertising for well over a decade, this is simply very, very funny. Ever since I can remember the award shows have been dominated… well, not “dominated”, but something darn close… by ads that Continue Reading…

Hmmm: Grant to strengthen consumer voice in telecommunications The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, today announced funding to assist in the establishment of a new telecommunications consumer peak body. “The Government wants to give consumers a more powerful and effective voice in the development of telecommunications policy,” Senator Conroy said. “To demonstrate our commitment to strengthening the consumer voice I have provided a grant of $87,000 to the Consumers’ Telecommunications Network (CTN) on behalf of the working group of consumer representation bodies.” (Gov Media Release) Maybe we should give the money to whirlpool.net.au? EDIT: thanks to ServantOfChaos for pointing me to TrukStop I was thinking about how we’ve always added our two cents worth to content we like. When I was growing up, Doc Neeson and The Angels had this song:Pristine version, from telly, but expletives are added in YouTube comments *laughs* After Doc Neeson (?) sang the main line “Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again” the crowd would scream back: No Way! Get F**ked! F**k Off! It got to the point where he would pause and point the mike to the audience for them to scream and go wild.User generated Continue Reading…

From today in The Australian: Net activism rattles ArabsFacebook, a site that offers a platform for the advancement of causes, political or otherwise, is quickly turning into a hotbed of activism: a cause for alarm to many autocratic regimes in the Middle East that attempt to curtail its reach by blocking it.(and) In Syria, the Government banned Facebook after an anti-regime email spam campaign was channelled through the site last year. But savvy Syrians, assisted by cyber colleagues abroad, succeeded in breaking through the censorship. Indeed, last November, when Facebook was blocked, it had 28,000 registered Syrian members. Five months Continue Reading…

Please don’t add corporate spam to what we already get (from apogee) Are we starting to see our code of conduct implemented by P.R. agencies? Looks like it Hat tip to Lukas Picton and team at Text 100 who put this survey together, Stilgherrian and Kelly F who forwarded it to me: APAC bloggers call for PR people to get online and blogText 100 asks 153 predominantly business, technology and news bloggers across APAC what they want from PR and corporation Text 100 today announced the results of the Text 100 APAC Blogger Survey a new survey aimed at helping Continue Reading…

… or evolve it? PHYSICIAN, HEAL THYSELF. The Gruen Transfer is buzzing: As of last night, 6100 spoof ads had been edited, scripted and uploaded to the website by viewers of The Gruen Transfer, the 10-part series which has been watched by more than 1 million viewers each week.(Julian Lee, Sydney Morning Herald, Monster Mash Gives Ad Boss Nightmares) Here’s the clincher for me: But some in the industry are less enthusiastic. Clemenger’s Mr Morgan said the advertising industry has been “led like lambs to the slaughter” to take part in “a slapstick show” and that the industry should have Continue Reading…

Beware: Bloggers don’t like to be ‘engaged’ with in a superficial ‘can you sell by site’ type way. A Pampered Life sucks could be an alternate heading? Or warning: discussion on menstrual cycle community ahead. Heh. I teach courses on how to engage bloggers as part of a social media campaign. But I don’t tell PR and Marketing agencies to do those faux whisper campaigns or to treat bloggers like free advertisers. Here’s the spam mail from A Pampered Life: Dear Laurel Papworth, We recently came upon your site, http://laurelpapworth.com/, and found it extremely helpful and informative for Australian women. From The Asia Times Online: Party time at South Korea’s protest 2.0 By Sunny Lee SEOUL – This is strange. Even as anti-government demonstrations in South Korea go, this is an odd, odd scene. Even a foreigner thinks so. “I have never seen anything like this before,” said Jeff Lazar, an American activist observing the ongoing protests here over the import of beef from the United States. “It’s like a festival. They are even using a laser projector to write their protest words in the air. It’s effective because it’s fun. It’s also a sure attention-grabber,” he adds. This was Continue Reading…

| View | Upload your own My presentation slides to Freelance Journalists Group (80 or so) last night – you can flick through the slides by clicking. As I mentioned earlier, I was invited to talk to The Sydney Freelance Journalists Group (MEAA)Basically the slides focus on blogs as content, facebook/digg as distribution, twitter as sources of stories and widgets/rss as advertising. Plus the need to blog to develop protection – from having ideas stolen and from editors wanting a writer/journo/blogger with an inbuilt readership/profile/acclaim. blogs being like Citizen Journalist articles. Depth of content, one to many, open distribution, ripple Continue Reading…

Old video – Live Feed is News Feed – one of the most successful viral marketing tools ever – and nearly got turned off! Even Rupert Murdoch thinks they are competitors instead of understanding the symbiotic nature of content vs distribution social networks. Here’s a piece from bloggingstocks “will myspace help or hurt newscorp over the long haul”? : The problem here for News Corp. is that users are fickle and may eventually find another MySpace in the future (obviously, Facebook is an example of how social networking continues to evolve and how any big brand in this arena can Continue Reading…
