I’m just really bookmarking this wiki for my own future reference. Pass it on to those Melbournites that a) might want to be involved and b) might have a clue, willya? Over the coming months the plan will continue to evolve under the guidance of the City of Melbourne’s Future Melbourne Team. During the public consultation period, 17 May to 14 June, there will be a further opportunity to help draft the Future Melbourne Plan online. iMatter social network for Arabic Women Shel Israel (co-author, with Robert Scoble, of Naked Converations) interviewed me about my Saudi Arabia trip. Here are the questions he asked me: SAP Global Survey: Australia’s Laurel Papworth Building a Social Network for Arab Women 1. You have two blogs. One shows an almost stern-looking corporate sort of woman. The other portrays a free-wheelin’ Aussie with pink hair. How do you reconcile these multiple personalities?2. How did you come to be invited to Saudi Arabia? Why did you decide to go? What scared you about going and can you talk about your problems Continue Reading…

hahahaha I don’t want to move from this position: I’ve been out of the list for months, but sometimes I’m back in as high as 75. Today I made it… just! Somehow position 100 feels right. *makes herself comfortable* Good ol’ Blogpond. I thought I’d post up the 10 minute spiel I gave the RMIT Communicator of the Year audience this morning. I took the “social network worst case scenario” storyline. Lots of fun, usually I focus on social media for Good Not Evil. A nice change. This is it, in essence: ******************************************************************** | View | Upload your own Public relations (PR) is the managing of internal and external communication of an organization to create and maintain a positive image. Public relations may involve popularizing successes, downplaying failures, announcing changes, and many other activities; but ethical P.R. practitioners can also convince companies Continue Reading…

I’m off to Melbourne – anyone wanna catch up? Thursday 24th April – I’m on the “Communicator of the Year” panel. At first I thought the invite said “Talker of the Year”. There’s a few of these popping up now – rural Australia geo-location village communities online.I had a quick look at it – developed by Simon van Wyk, Steve von Kohorn and Patrick Cusack. Simon is ex-Hothouse. Built on syndeo ::media – ruby on rails framework – and focussed on classifieds and business directory. I think it’s making the same mistakes as the old Backfence.com (which has folded and been reborn a number of times) but we’ll see. Still it can’t be any worse than the country Community-in-a-Box by Sensis, oops AUDA, that never really took off – I’ve blogged about Continue Reading…

I received the usual Twitter email today: Well, I don’t blindly follow people so I went to check out PodBlanc. The first thing I check when joining or inviting someone on a social network is their profiles. Then I check friends. Then content. That is: Profiles (who are they?) Friends (how are we connected?) Content (what do they say and do online?) In this case podblanc’s profile said eugenicist. No clue what one of them is. Friends following 567, followed by 37. Not a great sign, I prefer a smaller ratio of difference. Content? Ah this is where it gets Continue Reading…

Susan Tenby gave evidence to Congress about Second Life. Then, comedian John Stewart made fun of her big pink cat avatar in Second Life. The community responded in quite a funny way, wearing masks of John Stewart. This is not critical of the MSM man, more of homage, and an excuse to take the wave of interest John Stewart generated to push through the Second Life is Good for Not For Profits message. Well that’s my take on it, Susan Tenby didn’t seem that upset… even though apparently he made reference to her (pixel) breasts. (Hat tip: Mike Seyfang) Tags: second Continue Reading…

Well, that just about makes my day :SIs it mean of me that I don’t want to save her? I haven’t fed my Neopet in about 3 years, what gives with these wussy Bimbo dolls? And whatever happened to building social network Ritual – a black border on the email, flowers, tears? Nope. Nothing. Not even condolences. A U.K. Web site allows users — some of whom are as young as 8-years-old — create virtual “bimbos” who can then undergo breast augmentation and take diet pills. SilkCharm in Eyeore Pajamas and yellow Fluffy Duck slippers in Second Life (SilkCharm Sachertorte). I was running around Second Life in my Eyeore pajamas and fluffy duck slippers that light up last night -well, it was waaaaay past SilkCharm’s bedtime – when I bumped into Anya Ixchel (Angela Thomas, lecturer at University of Sydney). Thanks to TED TALKS for telling me about this:Of course that’s on YouTube: Here’s an inspiring way to start the week. Take a look at these films. They are each just one minute long. They feature a choir in one country singing another country’s national anthem: a simple idea that packs surprising emotional power. France sings for USA Kenya sings for India Japan sings for Turkey They were shot by film directors looking to support the landmark TED project Pangea Day (which I hope you have calendared for Saturday, May 10). The event is looking amazing, and I will be Continue Reading…

When people create an economy around an item, it’s because in their eyes, they’ve monetized it. Oh, maybe not in actual currency but hey! if it has importance as a medium of exchange, a store of value or a standard of value then it IS monetized. Even if I’m giving you 3 apples and my teddy bear, I am showing you it’s worth something. Ebay will often tell you what people are trading and therefore, what is valued. (ebay page of twitter sale) I really love my Twitter account but I feel like I haven’t been using it the way Continue Reading…
