I found an old interview with Dave Taylor (inventor of Elm Mail and Internet Mall), the interviewer is Doc Bob (Rankin).

Doc: The visibility you’ve gained from the Internet Mall has certainly been “good for business”. Let’s be brutally honest- did you think at the outset that it might be a good tool to help you market yourself?
Dave: No, I really didn’t. It was never meant to be a personal marketing tool, but one thing I have found is that many people who do selfless things on the Net end up getting recognition.

In case you couldn’t guess – I’m in a contemplative, philosophical mood and needed that little trip down memory lane.

Funny I was on Six Apart’s website yesterday (I’m a big fan) and saw no sign of the VideoEgg partnership to deliver one stop video blogs from your mobile phone, webcam, camcorder, whatever. But the SocialSoftwareWebLog did! It works as a browser plug-in to capture footage directly from your webcam or camcorder (or cameraphone! yes!) and deliver it straight to the web. This eliminates the considerable hassle of encoding and dealing with formats and generally mucking about in various and sundry video conversion steps. Rock on. Indeed. Rock on.

Publish Once, Sell Anywhere AV Publish, Navio’s core product, offers a powerful “publish once, sell anywhere” value proposition to content providers, media companies, mobile carriers, ISPs, and portals. AV Publish makes it easy to catalog digital goods, and to package rights to them as product offers. The key to “rights-based commerce,” these can be made available in any number of venues – simultaneously – in a web storefront, on mobile devices, within online communities, in traditional media, or even physical retail locations. Thanks to this rights-based approach, multiple digital product types can easily be drawn together into a single, compelling Continue Reading…

Information gatherers are lining up down the block for this, I’m sure. Its taken off like wildfire -betcha Ebay ends up with it! Kaboodle was founded by three guys with the same frustration: shopping across many sites is hard. Even a simple thing like planning a trip or where to eat can get messy. Every little research project on the web turns into a process of cutting and pasting into emails, word documents and spreadsheets. Sharing information is even harder: email a few comments, later find new relatedonline information, email with more comments, and finally end up with several pieces Continue Reading…

Disruptive? us? At a Churchill Club event on October 26, 2005, Jonathan Schwartz, president and COO at Sun was interviewed by Quentin Hardy, Silicon Valley bureau chief as Forbes. You can download the audio of the one-hour interview here. Schwartz reprises his usual, and perceptive, themes touting Sun’s vision and prejudices, such as how volume in the marketplace matters; the changing business landscape in which eBay could become a bank; Java as a platform for digital rights management; the disruptive influence of free software and online communities; IBM’s reluctant support, and validation, for OpenSolaris on its blade servers; why Google Continue Reading…

I love seeing offline and online community integration at work. (press release) Sun Microsystems Partners with California Conference on Women and Families, Enables Attendees to Participate in Online Communities and Share ExperiencesSun is providing the foundation for attendees to interact, share experiences, and engage in online discussions on specific topic areas under this year’s conference theme — Women as Architects for Change: Lessons on Leadership, Activism and Family. The Sun-powered, online communities will allow attendees and the broader community to communicate with each other through message boards and interactive online chats with community leaders. The communities can be formed and accessed Continue Reading…

So you “built it and they came” and oops, they keep arriving and arriving and arriving. And they all have opinions and you are short a few (hundred) moderators. What are you going to do? Slashdot has the answer: As you might have noticed, Slashdot gets a lot of comments. Thousands a day. Tens of thousands a month. At any given time, the database holds 40,000+ comments. A single story might have a thousand replies- and lets be realistic: Not all of the comments are that great. In fact, some are down right terrible– but others are truly gems. The Continue Reading…

I don’t know what to say… It’s an open invitation to predators and an activity Pope John XIII Regional High School in Sparta will no longer tolerate, Rev. Kieran McHugh told a packed assembly of 900 high school students two weeks ago.Effective immediately, and over student complaints, the teens were told to dismantle their Myspace.com accounts or similar sites with personal profiles and blogs. Defy the order and face suspension, students were told.In the arena of unregulated online communities, which has largely escaped the reach of schools, Pope John appears to be breaking new ground. While public and private schools Continue Reading…

I’ve just been reading (again) James Old (Pricewaterhouse Coopers) presentation (from 2001) regarding how to make money outta Online Communties. I’ve split the blog report into bits to make it more manageable and bloggy-like. These are the points raised. 1. What is the relationship between community and revenue? At its heart, the term ‘community’ implies a sense of belonging among members. If people belong to something then we can derive value from them. Community is one of the critical concepts underpinning Internet related value creation and business models. Yahoo’s purchase of Geocities for $46m and Lycos’ purchase of Tripod for Continue Reading…

2. What are the features of an online community? Now we move onto “the community hexagon” which nicely laid out and easy to understand. Let me give you a quick run down on these points – precisely tailored content is compelling content – not the mess of some portals – and advertising is an important form of content if done properly. Identification with Brand is really identification with community, and has the same quality as it does offline – identification isn’t a strong enough term in my book. Affinity is better, addiction better still heh. On that point, go see Sid Continue Reading…

3. Translating community into revenue and profit (woohoo the good stuff!) The six elements of the ‘hexagon’ describe what community looks like, but the real question is how community translates into revenue and profit. The majority of community-building activities do not generate revenue themselves. They create an environment that can potentially stimulate income generation. I wish I’d been at the presentation, standard marketing points are listed like advertising, ecommerce and commission, SWOT analysis, but no notes on how they relate to Virtual Communities. But there were some great diagrams. See the part about “Reduce by the % of online adults Continue Reading…

Ok ok… a confession. I spent waaaay too much time on The Shaadi Times – A relationship and wedding portal *sniffles* but I do soooo love a good wedding. The community aspect is the “matrimonial” – in other words, a dating forum – but there other lovely elements. I read an inspirational story – a Member Contribution – called “Lifting of the Veil, When Neeta Couldn’t See Her Face In The Mirror” and happily clicked through Customs and Rituals (Indian), Astrology and under Wedding Planning, they have a “tool” called “compile a gift list” – its actually a blog, with Continue Reading…

I was lucky enough to attend the 35th Anniversary Fundraiser for The Shepherd Centre last night. The Shepherd Centre is a charity which began in 1970 helping deaf and hearing impaired children learn to listen and speak so they can reach their individual potential. We receive limited government funding and provide our vital services free of charge to families. Over 30% of children attending our early intervention program have additional disabilities to hearing loss. What an amazing group of people! All of the speakers had profound hearing loss but through the work of the Centre and hearing implants, are now Continue Reading…

If you want Double Meat Pizza in the future and not Sprout Submarine Combo, you should see this : … actually I’m fine with it cuz I can never decide what to order on the phone anyway. >.

I spent some time doing broadcast (filming) football in Sydney for judiciary purposes. If I ever liked sport – which I doubt- I certainly didn’t after these gigs. “No I don’t know the score, I film it, not watch it!”. However rumour has it people do like sport – and particularly rumours about sports. Deadspin is an interesting online community developed around sport blogs and tips. 2. Why are you doing a blog about sports? Aren’t blogs about Hillary Clinton being a lesbian and Tara Reid drunkenly shoving firecrackers up her nose? Yes, blogs are about those things, and thank Continue Reading…
