Event: Jimmy Wales (Wikipedia) in Sydney, Australia

I’ll be at the Jimmy Wales event this Thursday:

Challenging how knowledge is created.

education.au proudly presents its first seminar in the 2007 seminar series – Challenging how knowledge is created. The keynote speaker for the seminar, which will be held in Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne, is Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia.

Jimmy Wales, the man behind Wikipedia, has a vision. The vision is for every person on the planet to be given free access to the sum of all human knowledge, and Wikipedia has been described as an exercise in the democratisation of that knowledge.

Wikipedia is also seen as being at the forefront of Web 2.0 – characterised by the new literacies of the 21st Century of inclusion, collaboration and participation.

Yes I know it’s a reminder from an earlier post. More of a reminder for me, not you! If you can’t make it/afford it/ have an evil boss, why not watch some of his stuff on video on TedTalks?

  1. Dear Laurel,

I’m sure Jimmy Wales will go over great down under. He was a big hit in person at TEDGlobal in Oxford. Thanks for linking to his talk on TED.com.

  2. *gobsmacked* Oh you are THAT Tom Reilly? From PlanetOut/TED? welcome to a little piece of Sydney (virtual). Or are you a bot? πŸ™

I love TED – it’s like a really informative site with a LinkedIn for grown-ups. (i.e. no myspacey collecting of the greatest number of *friends* and no HR consultants spamming jobs). Funny it was only when Lisa Holt from Telecom New Zealand told me about it that I spent any time on there – sorry Cat (Catriona kept sending me links which I immediately ignored :P)

And it’s so nice to have quality presentations available online – Australia is such a remote place, and such a long way to travel, that we die in raptures when a Jimmy Wales rocks up and spends a day with us. πŸ™‚ Cheerio.
