Datasheets and Model Card for AI Regulations in Australia
What does artificial intelligence need to help Australians retain control over their data? How about we start with nutrition labels (like the ones on Tim Tam packages) for example, model cards, datasheets and system cards
AI REGULATIONS in AUSTRALIA. I think a central issue to all regulatory discussions is the nutrition labels. That is: model cards, system cards and datasheets for datasets. The 4th challenge will be placing these nutrition labels “on chain” (make them verifiable like an NFT) so that the AI cannot be taken out to a boozy lunch and ingest some data or have it’s guardrails changed without a blockchain verification. Whoever solves this makes a gazillion dollars.
✅ datasheets for datasets – where did the data in the model come from? Once the New York Times loses their fight with OpenAI will they come for my company or Government department (printers rarely get sued for copyright, the customer/prompter does). Does my employer and my bank really need to know my health history updated for ever and ever?
✅ model cards – oh you want me to sign off on having my personal health data go into this model? Sure: lemme check which model and for what purpose? Every model needs to declare it’s algorithms and datasets (high level) and architecture. ChatGPT is made up of at least 8 models – which ones?
✅ System cards – oh you are integrating finance, client records, HR and more into the fine tuning of the system? Awesome… lemme check with compliance first. Is the system stated to be environmentally friendly? Can we have a fridge environmental label please?
✅ On Chain AI – cards as NFTs and verified by on chain checks. Jim in Sales can’t upload private patient data cos AI says No.

Actually on that, I mentioned to ChatGPT that we needed to get him some stickers and labels and did he mind? He said no probs, then listed these as similar services with (regulation) labels.
☆ Energy Star Labels on electronics and appliances for energy efficiency.
☆ Nutrition Facts Labels on food products.
☆ GHS Chemical Labels on chemicals for hazard information.
☆ Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) Scheme on water-related products in Australia.
☆ Monroney Sticker on new automobiles (showing fuel economy, pricing, etc.).
☆ Fair Trade Certification on products like coffee, tea, chocolate.
☆ USDA Organic Labels on organic food products.
☆ Building Energy Rating (BER) Certificates for buildings’ energy efficiency.
☆ LEED Certification on buildings for environmental sustainability.
☆ Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Label on sustainable seafood.
☆ Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certification on paper and wood products.
☆ Cosmetic Ingredient Labelling on personal care products.
☆ Electronics Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) Rating on electronic products.
☆ Woolmark Certification on woolen products.
☆ Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) on textiles.
I have no way of knowing if this is accurate cos it looks like #OpenAI took down their cards & classifiers *cough* court case *cough*. And y’know, transparency is not regulated, so they are allowed to. 😳
