Breaking News: All Online Data Lost After Internet Crash The Onion Breaking News: All Online Data Lost After Internet Crash *laughs* VERY funny video. Nothing really to do with the stuff I speak on (WebJam) about when web 2.0 will crash and the subsequent loss of user generated content when Google (YouTube) and Yahoo! (Flickr) pull the plug. But still, you get the point. ‘cept the part of the video about the internet not being backed up – I thought that was what we had Google doing? *puzzled*. Hat tip: Ilya Lichtenstein over at neomeme. Anyone heard of a company Continue Reading…

from Duncan Riley over at TechCrunch: Google has announced the launch of Google Gadget Ventures, a new pilot program that will help fund third-party gadget development and gadget-related businesses. Google will offer two types of funding: $5,000 grants for gadget developers who want to improve an existing gadget, and $100,000 seed investments for new gadget-related businesses. Applications will be restricted initially to gadget developers who have more than 250,000 pageviews per week on their gadget. Google aims to “help create an ecosystem where developers can spend more time doing what they love — building great gadgets”. In other words Google Continue Reading…

Short version: When you choose to co-create with a company, the sustainability of your content rises and falls with the fortunes of that company. If Flickr, Second Life, YouTube or *insert name of fave blogging software* vanishes, so does your hard work. … hush now, dry your eyes. The technology-heavy NASDAQ Composite index peaked in March 2000, reflecting the high point of the dot-com bubble Dotcom Crash 1.0 was the crash we had to have. Also known as the TechCrunch (not to be confused with that estimable blog thing), it forced Web beta and Web 1.0 companies to get with market Continue Reading…

some of the many many many faces of flickrOriginally uploaded by fubuki. I wrote a couple of days ago how the war between the traditional search types (how funny to say that now, ten years on) and the new social media search evangelists. It’s been on the boil for a while, but search: social media optimization still only has 295,000 hit returns on Google whereas search:search engine optimization has – well gosh! over 30 million! – 30,700,000 returns. That imbalance will change soon. Notice the funny spelling of optimisation? :p If you aren’t uptodate on the basic premise, it’s this. Continue Reading…

Versus Before you go cuddling up to Anson, it’s not our WebJam. Some, no doubt vastly inferior imitation, other WebJam. I didn’t go too far into it, just signed up really but it actually doesn’t look too bad – sort of a Ning.com competitor, with drag and drop blocks (blogs, forums, and so on): A London-based start-up founded by Yahoo! veterans, Webjam, provides individuals and communities with an innovative and versatile platform to create, aggregate and share contents online. The investment from French early stage venture capital firm I-Source Gestion will fuel further product development and global expansion. London, UK; Continue Reading…

Long Post cos I liked this video: Robert Scoble has a blog called Scobleizer. A book called Naked Conversations:How Blogs are Changing the Way Businesses Talk with Customers (with Shel Israel) From Amazon Robert Scoble helps run Microsoft’s Channel 9 Web site. He began his blog in 2000 and now has more than 3.5 million readers every year. Scoble’s blog has earned acclaim in Fortune magazine, Fast Company, and The Economist. But seriously, read the book if you must, but watch the video. Yes its an hour long: I watched it all the way through THREE times. He didn’t say Continue Reading…

AlooTechie put me on to this little slap-a-rama between Wired who claim Yahoo! could of won against Google in the early days and Wired pulls no punches, no sirree. Here’s the Wired article and here’s Yahoo’s response. The key to me was this paragraph: Terry Semel — a legendary Hollywood dealmaker, a guy who didn’t even use email — had not come to Silicon Valley to meekly merge with the geeky boys of Google. He had come to turn Yahoo into the next great media giant. Which might explain why the face of the famously serene CEO was slowly turning Continue Reading…

An interesting enough video on it’s own – and it’s been seen 3 million times, favourited 13,500 times and 6000 comments. But perhaps what we should pay attention to, are the 95 video responses to this ThisNThat Video and another one, Colour Monte (same trick). They have names like This N That revealed, This-n-that spoiler, learning thisNthat. So my question is this. If YouTube members are willing to create videos explaining how a card trick works, do you think they would be willing to put up a video about your product or service if they considered it interesting, excellent or Continue Reading…

Snippets from New York Times’ David Barboza article, courtesy of The Ledger Online: Today, Baidu has a market value of $3 billion and operates the fourth-most trafficked Web site in the world. And Baidu is doing what no other Internet company has been able to do: clobbering Google and Yahoo in its home market. But Baidus evolution, and Mr. Lis journey as an entrepreneur, offer textbook examples of the payoffs and perils of doing business in China and suggest that Baidu may prove to be far more resilient than some analysts believe. China has a population of 1.3 billion, about Continue Reading…
