I’m beginning to get nervous around Top Lists.First Question: What if I’m not on it? Well, internationally, I’ve made it onto the Power150 Media and Marketing blog list at AdAge (Advertising Age).#123 Laurel Papworth Social Network Marketing. Globally!… which is quite stressful because every time Technorati stuffs up, I drop 100 points. Talking of Technorati #27,646 blogger (any subject) in the world. Not bad for this blog!… they lost my blog. Recovered it, now lost my fans. So I’ve dropped Authority to 170, yet am in the top 30k of bloggers in the world. Considering there are a hundred million Continue Reading…

Anyway some tips – you might want to do these step by step. I wrote them that way: What is Twitter: Twitter is a place for testimonials (status updates about themselves “I am shopping”). No response required. What is Twitter: Twitter is a place for distribution of information (links to others “here’s a cool blog post http://tinyurl.com”) – also automated bots e.g. @ABCNews What is Twitter: Twitter is the place for Continue Reading…

I can’t wait for YouTube to crash (DotCom 2.0 Crash – UGC Tears before bedtime) – better sooner than later, we’ll lose some videos but it’ll make us wake up ethics and need to secure our user generated content on sharing sites. I also figure we’ll move away from centralised hosting services with locked down content like YouTube to decentralised peer-to-peer (flexible) networks and open content such as group-editable livecasting on Mogulus or something. But make no mistake: this is crunch time. And it’s gonna hurt – the list includes: Twitter Although well-used by many and even relied upon by Continue Reading…

Customer Service – not Marketing, not P.R., not anyone else – should be handling the online community relationship with your customers. Or, if you have a technical product/service, it’s technical support, or helpdesk. Surely that’s obvious? Yes? No?I laid out different community manager roles in this post, and have talked about customer service running social networks before, but it bears explaining in more detail. Marketing are trained to observe the customer. Not the individuals but the demographic. When was the last time a marketing person got back to a focus group member and told them how they were going to Continue Reading…

I was reading Pigs Don’t Fly and found this: Using banner ads is not social media marketing. They are simply a traditional, interruption media attempting to use a old practise that doesn’t work in this new space on the Interwebs. What was that all about, I wondered? Well it seems that SwitchedOnMedia is promoting the use of Facebook Social Ads as a Social Media strategy (SwitchedOnMedia blog is hidden away). Why use Facebook Advertising? The breakthough market of Facebook is a flexible advertising channel. We can mine a rich database of potential customers for you, attract participants for market research Continue Reading…

For the last year or so I’ve been speaking – at conferences, in courses, wherever – about the dangers of going to war with your customer. And how the next wave is going to be companies concentrating all their energies on damage control. No more questions of ‘should we be involved in social media’ but ‘what the hell?!! quick, start a blog or something!”. *rolls eyes*. Here’s a typical community:Shall we start one up in Australia? Which Australian brands would head the list – don’t say Telstra, boring – pick another one. Here’s the about us page: Are you PISSED? Continue Reading…

hahahahaha – give a major supermarket chain a broadcast marketing channel and they make it impossible to get information from it. That’s right – you have to sign up before you can get P.R. and marketing information. Barrier to entry – anyone wanna explain to me why the general public would bother to sign up Continue Reading…
