He should stick to politics – how quickly they forget! It wasn’t traditional media in the US that put Barack Obama in office, if I’m not mistaken:

Mr. Obama said he noted the trend. “I am concerned that if the direction of the news is all blogosphere, all opinions, with no serious fact-checking, no serious attempts to put stories in context, that what you will end up getting is people shouting at each other across the void but not a lot of mutual understanding,” the President said.”What I hope is that people start understanding if you’re getting your newspaper over the Internet, that’s not free and there’s got to be a way to find a business model that supports that.”

Pfft. Maybe it has to do with the fact that bloggers are starting to take on the role that journalists also do, which is undercover investigations – and it didn’t go well for Obama: barack Obama

Presidential candidate Barack Obama’s campaign has been in full damage control mode since the senator’s blunt remarks about the nature of small town Pennsylvania voters were secretly recorded by a Huffington Post blogger at a recent San Francisco fundraiser that was supposed to be off limits to the press. After the radio interview with Tony Delroy a few days ago, I’ve had an inordinate number of requests for information on social lending and microfinancing sites. Particularly Australian p2p banks. Remember a bank holds money that the community members have each – for example, salaries, or savings. Then the bank manager takes the community money and decides who to give loans to – back to a community member. Peer to peer loans (many members providing parts of one loan) simply disintermediates the aggregator/bank manager. Bypasses the middle man – the community members decide who they are going to lend the Continue Reading…

Just a quick note on a prediction regarding Advertising revenue and online communities: An old article via Marketing Vox but worth watching to see how close they get next year: Ad Spend on Social Networks to Reach $2B in 2010 Ad spending on U.S. social-networking sites in 2007 is expected to reach $865 million, up from $350 million in 2006, and will surpass $2 billion in 2010, according to eMarketer. From Scobleizer TV Lots of interesting content in here. I’m particularly taken with their – admittedly a bit fluffy – overview of social currency and the value of a large following vs reach vs velocity to PR and influence measurers. But the part I keep thinking about, is the first bit. The discussion on why companies will be looking at social media in an economic downturn. I think that once companies realise that they can gain 5x brand recall, drop 1/4 customer/technical support costs, and so on and so forth, the economy will force them to take some baby steps Continue Reading…

AUSTRALIA: I’m not sure if I’ll have time to do exact end-of-year statistics for Facebook so here they are a bit early. 3 million 9 hundred and 55 thousand, 960 Australians on Facebook. I guess we’ll be exactly at 4 million early in the New Year? No wonder Facebook are opening an office in Australia. On December 8th last year (2007) I wrote a Happy 2 Million Australians, Facebook post. So they’ve doubled in a year, in Australia. Not bad, when you are signing up a population of 21 million at a rate of 2 million a year. Stories of Continue Reading…

From Sunday Star Times on Stuff.co.nz – and I’m gonna say up front: there is no point being a prophet if you do not use every means available to be heard, and understood. Wayne Lachore… … emerged from the Coromandel to warn the world of a looming catastrophic collapse of western economies, and the US in particular. Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae were disasters waiting to happen, he wrote in a series of email essays to big-hitters from Prime Minister Helen Clark down. The hugely indebted US was effectively bankrupted, sufficient to cause a global financial vortex. but no one Continue Reading…

Personally, I think it is a beautiful device, and in particular it revolutionizes the user experience for the mobile web. In the US and Continue Reading…

Hey, if you can figure out a login/password, lemme know? But ssshhhh! Oh y’know it’s funny to find out the CIA are using social media for intellipedia: Intellipedia was founded in April 2006 [1] and consists of three wikis running on JWICS, SIPRNet, and Intelink-U. They are used by individuals with appropriate clearances from the 16 agencies of the United States intelligence community and other national-security related organizations, including Combatant Commands and federal departments. The wikis are not open to the public. … well goshdarnit *pouts* I guess if your organisation says they don’t want to use ‘social’ media cos Continue Reading…
