If you run a social network do NOT, do NOT, repeat do NOT be bullied into deleting the system profile by your naive members. Seriously. Social Networks have a minimum of THREE profiles for members. Public profile – what can be seen by visitors/friends/other members of the community Private profile – what can be seen only by the member (email address or real life home address etc). Credit card details. System profile – stuff the member isn’t aware of revealing. IP address, history of email addresses, verification replies, alternate accounts, sometimes a history of abusive behavior and reprimands. Well run Continue Reading…

Guess which country – UK or Australia? Oh, ok stupid question. :What’s the max download speed in Australia? Max monthly usage without shaping, for home use (ie not paying corporate rates)?Does anyone in Australia offer free broadband? Around $38 per month – broadband, international calls, line rental. That doesn’t sound too bad to me. Where do I sign up? Oh wait… TalkTalk from Carphone Warehouse is only in the U.K. Technorati Tags: talktalk, carphone warehouse, u.k. australia, broadband

Well, this sucks. From AsiaMedia. AUSTRALIA: Web 2.0? Don’t bank on it just yet Australian banks won’t provide latest online financial services, such as wikis or peer-to-peer lending, due to lack of infrastructure and low retention rates of skilled IT staff AUSTRALIAN bank infrastructure is “not robust enough” to deliver secure web 2.0 banking and financial services. That’s the warning last week’s Future of Banking and Financial Services event in Sydney heard but demand and overseas influence will change how banking is done, delegates were told. Who’s handling the launch of the current.tv in Australia, anyone know? I’ve got some ideas – and I don’t want the standard VCAD $1000 bucks for ‘em either. Anyone know the agencies that normally work with Foxtel? I spoke with Kim Williams and he said Foxtel was in discussions with current.tv. That was back in March just as current.tv doubled their subscriber base from 28 million in the US by adding in 25 million viewers from the U.K. For those of you who’ve never heard of ‘em, current.tv is a user generated channel with user generated ads. Oh shi….vers. I Continue Reading…

You think this is a joke???!!! Mesh is where you – at home or in your office – donate a tiny sliver of your broadband to the ether, to create a mesh around Sydney or San Francisco or whereever, so people can walk around with mobile devices or laptops and access the internet using wifi. Until now, I’ve been wondering why people would do that. I mean, I get that they would – we donate a lot of time and energy to collaboration online, peer-to-peer support and content for free – but still, I thought it would be a bit Continue Reading…

Video here at YouTube Next time someone tells you MySpace and YouTube are for emo-goth, time wasting, geeky nerdy kids, say “Yeah and some of ‘em are 90 years old.” Then point them to the The Zimmers.Click to go to their MySpace page. Are you noticing a trend in traditional marketing towards ‘user generated content’ simplicity yet? Funny how we didn’t really need sophisticated selling mechanisms all along – if you’ve got a story to tell, a position to defend, a point to make – well, make it already! If you want to waste some more time (and you’d probably already Continue Reading…

Well, social networks work really well around Rituals and Events, for starters. Plus the site would look sooooo pretty. Aw shucks. I looked at a few of the Australian wedding communities – basically they stuck up a forum and called it a social network. Wedding Centralphpbb forum, and maybe tinyportal CMS?i-do.com.au not sure of the forum software, they have a few toolsthere was another one I can’t think of right now Diary something. None of the sites Continue Reading…

I get confused when PR people launch a service ignore niche communities online. But it’s addles my poor brain even more when it’s a Web 2.0 service provider ignoring We Media. Sooooo, I found this a little mind-boggling: traditional media > than bloggers when promoting social networking sites? I may have missed one of you, but I went through blogs from Ad:Tech (february) onwards and didn’t see any of you lot talking up Bebo. : PR Case study – Bebo 7 June 2007 Posted by Catriona Pollard in case studies. trackback Bebo is a global social networking website which aims Continue Reading…

Uhoh. Bad news for fakers – from The Times (hat tip: G2 New Zealand) Fake bloggers soon to be ‘named and shamed’ Hotels, restaurants and online shops that post glowing reviews about themselves under false identities could face criminal prosecution under new rules that come into force next year. Businesses which write fake blog entries or create whole wesbites purporting to be from customers will fall foul of a European directive banning them from “falsely representing oneself as a consumer”. From December 31, when the change becomes law in the UK, they can be named and shamed by trading standards Continue Reading…
