Good ol’ Forresters (from AdWeek): NEW YORK The looming economic downturn will inevitably lead to a decrease in ad spending, but marketers are likely to continue shifting money into social media, according to a new study. According to the Forrester Research report, marketer moves into areas like word of mouth, blogging and social networking will withstand tightened budgets. In contrast, marketers are likely to decrease spending in traditional media and even online vehicles geared to building brand awareness. Those findings stand in contrast to the previous economic downturn, when spending on Internet advertising cratered as marketers turned to tried-and-true media. Continue Reading…

Or maybe I should say revenue back to the consumer for consumer generated content: O2 and 3 Merge Communities Network rivals O2 and 3 are going to merge their two user-generated content communities into a single collective. The new community, to be named Eyevibe, will see O2′s LookatMe and 3′s SeeMeTV video services bundled together collecting over 60,000 videos. The service enables subscribers throughout the UK to submit video clips on any subject to an online gallery, which can be viewed by other users on their mobile handset. Each time a clip is downloaded, the original content contributor receives a Continue Reading…

I first thought it said “waiting for something to bing” – as in email, facebook or twitter notifications. Hmmm actually social networking isn’t a waste of a companies time and money. But it’s a little hard to convince non-believers. Some random facts about my foray into social media, user generated content and online communities: and yes, I know most people keep their contacts and how -they-connected to themselves but we are talking about a new transparent era in communication, right? Twitter profile – has brought me quite a few leads. @kerryank on Twitter liked my tweets, found out more and Continue Reading…

I’ve got a thing about lawyers. I don’t know what it is.. brainy? glasses? I think they were the original geeks, before technology came along. Anyway, I am downloading this right now as we speak. (from social customer manifesto) Social Networking for Business and the Law: A Podcast (iTunes) (MP3) Ok, that was fun. Had a chance to chat last week regarding social networking with a bunch of great folks, including: Kara Swisher, co-executive editor of All Things Digital Law.com bloggers and co-hosts, J. Craig Williams and Robert Ambrogi Eric Goldman, Director of the High Tech Law Institute at Santa Continue Reading…

I signed up for Squidoo today. I’ve tried a few times before, but then would get part of the way through the sign up process, see that they wont’ state what is published publicly and what is not, and give up. I tend to walk away from sites that don’t treat me with respect. I took a deep breath and worked my way through annoyance and signed up anyway. But let me state that registering for a site that insists I give personal information – be it my real name, my email address or my birthdate, and does NOT make Continue Reading…

Those poor darlings at ADMA had to sit and listen to me waffle on about how Web 2.0 social media, social news, social bookmarking and social search were going to change their world. As they hadn’t yet learnt about Search Engine Optimisation (also, apparently, called Search Engine Marketing), and as social search is not yet an exact science, it was a fun exploration. Hitwise is on board: Traffic from social networking websites influences Singaporean appliance and electronics shopping online Posted: 09 Oct 2007 06:26 PM CDT According to Hitwise Singapore, for the week ending October 9, 2007, while search engines Continue Reading…

Friend of mine needs advice. Should she go see this guy’s band (long story) or stay away? Please go to her site and vote -there’s a poll – before the weekend, cos she’s not sure what to do with him? Hmmm? What do you mean, this post is not about social networking? It is so about social networking! If I can’t ask my social network to give romantic advice, what can I ask them? What use are y’all? I’ve told her my opinion, but she doesn’t listen to me. Nobody does. I’ve forgotten where I saw this originally Have a Continue Reading…

Yep Teledildonics is exactly what you think it is. Long before Amy Jo Kim and Jenny Preece wrote their Social Networking bibles in the late ’90s, and long, long before Danah Boyd started making friends on Friendster, Howard Rheingold was writing, speaking and evangelising communities online (late ’80′s). How can you not love a man who writes 20 pages on Teledildonics his book Virtual Reality. How can you not worship a technologist/futurist who opens a chapter with: There was a young man named Kleenewho invented a fucking machineConcave or convex, it fit either sexand was exceedingly easy to clean Ask Continue Reading…

This one made me laugh (i’m getting to be quite a fan of half geek): Social Networking is better than smoking It’s happening here in New Zealand now- the corporate revolt against employees using social networks on employer owned hardware and networks. The calls of ‘productivity’ cry from the huge offices.Just the other day I lost access to a variety of website’s at my job due to a network upgrade- and I’m employed as an online strategist! Bizarre……. Corporations are going to need to start seeing the we are in the midst of a cultural revolution. If they do not, Continue Reading…

Anyone here use Facebook? *poke* poke* From Ad Age: 23-Year-Old Mark Zuckerberg Has Google Sweating Idealist Entrepreneur’s Facebook Offers Something Search Doesn’t–Distribution By Abbey Klaassen Just as Google has become what some people call the operating system for search, Facebook is turning itself into the operating system for social networking. While Google knows what millions of people are searching for, Facebook has something the search giant hasn’t been able to grow: a network of connections between people that creates a viral distribution platform unrivaled by any portal or search engine. In late May, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the social Continue Reading…

I get a bit cross when basic standards of social networking aren’t adhered to, particularly when it comes to companies-who-should-know-better. Such as MySpace. Plus I’m always in trouble. I just muddle on, minding my own business, and whammo, I’m in deep doo-doos. Here’s my MySpace problem. See my age? Well it’s in ELF years. Part of my “grumpy elf with attitude” roleplaying thingie I’ve got going on. You don’t have to understand, like, or agree with it, but heigh ho, it’s the way I rolled it… Anyway, I checked my MySpace page the other day and noticed a message from Continue Reading…

Soooooo cute! Last week, Amazon sent me a bunch of Webkinz info in my weekly email. So now I’m worried – what on earth during my searches for books on online communities, popular marketing, new agey stuff and murder mysteries (although “cozy” mysterys are more my speed) would make them think I was interested in children’s toys? It’s even scarier that they are so perceptive, because in some deep , dark, secret, unadmitted place within myself, I am… I adore ‘em! I love having nieces and nephews cos I buy them what I want to play with. But never, ever Continue Reading…
