I’ve felt a bit like a voice in the wilderness, claiming Australians blog, we just don’t do it in a centralised, countable way (Blogger and WordPress are overseas sites). Certainly there have been some PR and media bloggers who say that Australians don’t blog or engage in User Generated Content (Consumer Generated Media). They were wrong and now we have stats (pdf) to prove it: The report has identified that among CGM activities, consumers are most likely to share/send photos and links, with content sharing and distribution generally seen as the initial entry point to CGM activity engagement – 84 Continue Reading…

You can generate your own Hollywood sign (and chocolate bar etc) at GlassGiant I have a hobby. And no, it’ s not computer games, virtual worlds or hanging around on Facebook. That’s work, not hobby! Heh. I do acting. I find it’s not intellectual, but emotional. It’s not sitting still but involves the body. In other words, it gets me out of cyberspace and grounded in real space like nothing else. Watching TV is too much like a non-participatory headspace of the ‘net. Acting however is a whole different experience. So if you’ve seen me from time to time in Continue Reading…

Bumpz0red because I added in the stats from Hitwise. For each word you get right, we donate 10 grains of rice through the United Nations to help end world hunger.Freerice needs to have a much better backstory/about section than this (is it really for the UN?): FreeRice is a sister site of the world poverty site, Poverty.com. FreeRice has two goals: Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free. This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site. Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or Continue Reading…

EDIT: I had a very nice voicemail from NZ Police Superintendent Hamish McCardle, the officer in charge of developing the new act – he wanted to let us know that they agree about transparency and that today the wiki is back up as a Document of Record. He also mentioned that they got a huge amount of press coverage overseas including the BBC. The Sydney Morning Herald asked me about a New Zealand Wiki that had emerged out of the New Zealand Police Department. I (of course) pretended I was completely up to speed on it all, while madly Googling Continue Reading…

I love wanky titles.Sooooooo, how’s my baby, the site Bloggerati Australia coming along? You need a little update, methinks. First, it’s worked out better than I expected. My primary purpose was personal – to bookmark any and all articles and sites I came across that were Web 2.0 and Australia/New Zealand focussed. I initially was just going to bookmark them in del.icio.us but it seemed clunky. Plus, my life’s mantra is “Be lazy, have the network do it for you”. This one made me laugh (i’m getting to be quite a fan of half geek): Social Networking is better than smoking It’s happening here in New Zealand now- the corporate revolt against employees using social networks on employer owned hardware and networks. The calls of ‘productivity’ cry from the huge offices.Just the other day I lost access to a variety of website’s at my job due to a network upgrade- and I’m employed as an online strategist! Bizarre……. Corporations are going to need to start seeing the we are in the midst of a cultural revolution. If they do not, Continue Reading…

Seven years ago, I lived in Singapore. I was there for nearly two years. And even back then, their adoption of technology was impressive. If I rang for a taxi, the automated system would ask me if I was 1. calling from home 2. calling from work, or 3. calling from elsewhere. Then it would ask me the same questions about where I wanted to go (home, work or elsewhere). If I was a work and wanted to taxi home, it would auto-give me the plate registration of the pickup cab. I heard that the GPS/LBS services now are such Continue Reading…

I get confused when PR people launch a service ignore niche communities online. But it’s addles my poor brain even more when it’s a Web 2.0 service provider ignoring We Media. Sooooo, I found this a little mind-boggling: traditional media > than bloggers when promoting social networking sites? I may have missed one of you, but I went through blogs from Ad:Tech (february) onwards and didn’t see any of you lot talking up Bebo. : PR Case study – Bebo 7 June 2007 Posted by Catriona Pollard in case studies. trackback Bebo is a global social networking website which aims Continue Reading…

I spoke at a conference last year about Gonzo Marketing and the move towards underwriting online communities rather than online advertising to static portals as branding model. Here’s a community around supporting people with diabetes in New Zealand. Renima Malhotra and Dr Rosemary Stockdale. Online support for diabetes sufferers The thousands of New Zealanders with diabetes may soon be able to join an online community to seek information and support from others with the condition. On line communities dedicated to people with a wide range of conditions are springing up all over the world. Now researchers based in the Institute Continue Reading…

Update: Michelle’s new site.My friend from Massey University in New Zealand is Michelle Mars. Today she was interviewed by Kate O’Toole at Triple J’s hack program about, of all things, designer vaginas. Have a listen to her recorded interview – it’s an intriguing phenomenon. If you’re a major fan of the Brazillian… you’ll wanna know about this! 2 academics at MASSEY University in New Zealand reckon that the designer vagina has inflitrated pop culture – so much so – that there’s not alot of room for full bush anymore. Are we really such sheep? It reminds me of Snow Crash Continue Reading…
