I’ve got two questions for you. And I have tried to get them answered in other places first – I just know that some of you readers are knowledgeable in a couple of areas where I don’t ace it (me? humble? neveh!) Question 1. Why does Google Search (Australia) hate this blog? If you go to google.com and search for social networks australia, this blog comes top. If you go to google.com.au and search for social networks this blog does not exist. And I do mean at all. My crappy world.com.au site comes up eventually but Laurel Papworth – Online Continue Reading…

Long Post cos I liked this video: Robert Scoble has a blog called Scobleizer. A book called Naked Conversations:How Blogs are Changing the Way Businesses Talk with Customers (with Shel Israel) From Amazon Robert Scoble helps run Microsoft’s Channel 9 Web site. He began his blog in 2000 and now has more than 3.5 million readers every year. Scoble’s blog has earned acclaim in Fortune magazine, Fast Company, and The Economist. But seriously, read the book if you must, but watch the video. Yes its an hour long: I watched it all the way through THREE times. He didn’t say Continue Reading…

I was interviewed last week, on video, at Cafe Norton in North Sydney by Nick Hodge. I knew Nick in Adelaide aeons ago, and really wasn’t expecting him to shove a camera in my face while having a “catch up” coffee. Grrrrrrr! :p He’s doing a Geek Stories series for the on10 network(not the Aussie free-to-air channel, but a Microsoft initiative) and it was … an interesting way to have breakfast. Here’s a snippet.Full interview and video is here. Oh and I’m meeting Steven Noble of Hill and Knowlton for coffee next week. We’ll see if he is as geeky in Continue Reading…

Homeland Stupidity? I’m really intrigued. Not so much by sites with cool and irreverent names, but by their Gonzo Marketing techniques (I loved that book). I should link to the author but do I pick his evil alter ego Rage Boy or his grown up *boring* Wired magazine, Cluetrain Manifesto editor link- guess which one I picked? Not only does Homeland Stupidity have a funny Domain Name, but they also have anti-marketing on their site such as: “Entertaining and insightful” — Jim Harper, director of information policy studies, Cato Institute

I haven’t read anything of Stan Beer‘s in a while: Zune and Wi-Fi versus iPhone and carriers? When you hear news that a consortium that includes Microsoft, Google, HP, Dell and Intel, among others has filed to submit a wireless handheld Internet access prototype device developed by Microsoft to the Federal Communications Commission, you know something is up. When you also hear rumours that the device may be based upon a Zune then you suspect a war is brewing and it involves telcos as well. When Steve Jobs took the stage last month at Macworld to announce Apple’s relationship with Cingular, Continue Reading…

We love Jim Benson. Yes we do. We’re Gonna Zune Zune Zune ah ZuneI guess I don’t understand what a Launch is. Techmeme is abuzz today about Microsoft “Launching” their iPod called Zune. But you can’t buy one until the holidays and they won’t tell you how much one will cost. That’s not really a Launch. Social networking gets bounced around here too because Zune’s have 802.11 built in and you can send music and video to someone nearby. It’s highly DRMed – the recipient can only view it three times. If they don’t view it three times within three days, Continue Reading…

Computeractive.co.uk brought this information from Sean Nichols (vunet.com) to my attention – it’s the official release of Zune today: Microsoft has released details of its much-anticipated Zune media player. The device will offer 30GB of storage, access to online communities and music stores, and a wireless networking feature allowing users to share media. It will feature a 3in screen and come in black, brown or white. Unconfirmed reports claim that the Zune will sell at $299, and will be launched in time for the holiday season. The device is said to be based on Toshiba‘s Gigabeat player. What do they Continue Reading…

I was at a breakfast with Martin Dalgleish last week and he had a couple of smartypants comments to make about BigPond’s useability. Another lady piped up and asked him how much of PBLs budget goes on NineMSN’s useability studies. Gently smacked down – PBL keeps NineMSN operational budgets seperate of course. But I do know what she was implying and she’s right, NineMSN’s useability is a shocker. People in glass houses shouldn’t caste the first stone (or mix metaphors). But bad as it is, thats not the worst part: its the Sociability. From NineMSN’s mediacentre. Reach 73 percent of Continue Reading…

Lots and lots on the ‘net recently about Google Research into “Social- and Interactive-Television Applications Based on Real-Time Ambient-Audio Identification” and how we would feel about Google listening into our real-life arguments and offering ads for marriage counselling. Oh ok, I admit, I haven’t actually seen that particular point being made, but I’m sure someone somewhere thought of it as well. The system compresses the captured audio into irreversible (emphasis theirs) summary statistics which are then compared to a database of mass media statistics and used to determine what the browser should display. Possible service offerings discussed in the paper Continue Reading…

2Spare.com (2 Much Time 2 Spare) have a list of the top 87 bad predictions in all sectors. The list has 590 votes. Let me extract out the ones of interest in computing and such – and I’ll add a few at the bottom of recent ones: «640k is enough for everyone.» William F. Gates III «I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.» IBM Chairman Thomas Watson, 1943. «Everything that can be invented has been invented.» Charles H. Duell, an official at the US patent office, 1899. «This antitrust thing will blow over.» Bill Gates, founder Continue Reading…

I was looking at the court case between Nintendo vs Sony/Every Technology Company In the World regarding motion sensor devices, and noticed that Nintendo said that their little hand held console device that looks like a TV remote has… well, guess how many patents? It looks like a TV remote and has a handful of buttons on it. One patent? 5? 10? 25? Nope, he said 50 to 55 patents. What chance does the little guy (me!) have when we can barely afford one patent to protect our IP? Which is why when court cases like NTP vs RIM (Blackberry) Continue Reading…

Back in November (Ingame Advertising Platform) I talked about empty billboards in popular games such as City of Heroes. Well it seems that Microsoft has just picked up Massive Inc., founded by Aussie Mitch Davis. Good for him: He figured he could make money selling advertising space in the background features of video games, such as roadside billboards in car racing games. The advertising, designed to be incidental to the main action, has been placed in games on pizza boxes, TV screens and soft-drink cans.He set about convincing video game companies of the value of the software and in the Continue Reading…

A number of people either dropped hardcopy on my desk or emailed me the article from The Sydney Morning Herald Simply the Best by David Stonehouse. By David Sifry’s count, there are more than 33 million blogs out there. He’s in a good position to know – he’s the founder and chief executive of Technorati www.technorati.com, a search engine for blogs I’ve already been to six out of 10 of those blogs – not bad going when you consider there are still 32,999,990 to go. Enter your opinion on the SMH blog here. BTW watch Technorati, they play their cards Continue Reading…
