As the online community provider Ning moves from freemium to pay-for services (and eventual death, by Christmas, I reckon) they are sending out warning, reminder notices on email. None of those emails tell you how to remove or delete your Ning network:
It’s the little things that set off customers into becoming anti -brand vigilantes. *laughs* This guy was taking a video outside Trader Joes, an American assorted goods store, by the look of it. : If I made a commercial for Trader Joe’s. One day I was taking a photo of a primitive but lovely hand-drawn chalk sign when a manager came running over to tell me cameras aren’t allowed in Trader Joe’s. Well, he didn’t say anything about cell phones so I decided then and there to make a commercial for TJ’s on my Treo. Up until now they haven’t Continue Reading…
.. so what is a “social media proprietor”? And how is s/he different from a blogger? Dunno, don’t ask me. Google it…. uh oh, we are both in trouble. The only response from Google on “social media proprietor(s)” are MY presentations. So either they don’t exist, have another name or … I’m the first one to document them. heh. Moving right along… Social media proprietors focus on a number of things that bloggers may not: advertising – display, banner, those little boxy things. classifieds – jobs is popular, the rivers of gold running to social media. merchandising – any old Continue Reading…
That title Corporate Social Media looks funny doesn’t it? I mean, some people still think of ‘social‘ as ‘party‘. Like, Corey from Melbourne on MySpace. They don’t realise that ‘social‘ means ‘society‘ – friends and family, yes, but also sports heroes and politicians and other leaders, and those we deem tabloid worthy – the Angelina Jolie’s and Britney’s of our social sphere. I wonder if we had changed from online communities to customer communities or consumer networks if it would’ve looked less jarring? Corporate Customer Media or similar? I think companies will move their Corporate Social Responsibility front and centre Continue Reading…

*warning potential linkbait post coming up. Heh. I’m noticing a disturbing trend of large well known companies who invite passionate Web 2.0 evangelists, or knowledgeable bloggers or bumbling social network strategists (me) to “meetings” to discuss “potential” working arrangements. These companies then proceed to question, prod, probe and otherwise force themselves on the (usually) solo operator or small business, all the while taking notes. One manager told me he had spoken to around “200″ web 2.0 people (OMG!), and developed pages and pages of notes for strategies. No paid-for business ever comes of it (nor was ever going to) but Continue Reading…
I get confused when PR people launch a service ignore niche communities online. But it’s addles my poor brain even more when it’s a Web 2.0 service provider ignoring We Media. Sooooo, I found this a little mind-boggling: traditional media > than bloggers when promoting social networking sites? I may have missed one of you, but I went through blogs from Ad:Tech (february) onwards and didn’t see any of you lot talking up Bebo. : PR Case study – Bebo 7 June 2007 Posted by Catriona Pollard in case studies. trackback Bebo is a global social networking website which aims Continue Reading…
Hat Tip: Stephen Withers of ITWire. Brisbane and Launceston helpdesks of Telstra are being closed down – or ‘boned’ (Telstra employee words, not mine). Nothing too unusual I guess – redundancies happen- just odd that Telstra have what… 14 bloggers? This is the second one to be booted. Conversation over Technical Difficulties: It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine… by Nic Frankpitt, Friday, 08 June 2007 This post contains an angry person ranting. I thought you might like that as a warning, first of all. If you don’t want to read it, that’s Continue Reading…

I bought this month’s Marketing magazine. Dunno why, I got plenty to read online. I just found a really really great article on radio in it. So many critical points including the fact that (in lieu of location based service advertising) its the absolutely best medium for grabbing our attention while we are on the way to the shops. But look at this quote from Geoffrey McDonald Bowll of The StarShip: Shock JocksThe process is the producers pick a topic they think will get some angst going; say Muslim girls wearing headdress to public schools being told not to – Continue Reading…
Love what’s hapening over at CNet – they are slowly but surely evolving into collaborative shopping site. I had a brief (email) convo with Jeremy R., the snr Editor for Australia.
