Electrolux global social media summit in Stockholm with video of me Laurel Papworth as the representative from Australia/Asia.  Peter Shankman from HelpAReporterOut was part of the summit too!

Electrolux hosted a global social media summit from Stockholm, Sweden on Monday night. They invited a social media strategist from each continent to speak for 10 minutes on the State of Social Media in their country or region. There was dodgy sound – India and Hong Kong were worse than mine and hardly able to be heard. The American representative was Peter Shankman, the guy that started HARO – Help a Reporter Out, initially as a Facebook group and now a mailing list of 100,000 supporters.  I have blogged about before.  I was invited to speak as the Australian representative:

Note, I haven’t been in online marketing since 1989 – I’ve been in online communities since 1989. Kind of a major difference.

… but not on Heritage Media.TweetGrid video (click HIGH DEFINITION on YouTube site if you want to read words clearly) First. The bombings in Mumbai are shocking. Loss of life, fear, a tragedy being played out live is not Entertainment. CNN seems to be covering the hotel damage more than the people lost but to be fair, it’s a visual medium and buildings burning show more than statistics in a broadcast medium. Twitterers are all over it. People are videoing in the streets, taking photos, reporting back to their social networks. CNN coverage is simply not up to scratch, nor Continue Reading…

At 1:15 is the New Zealand one – really really funny. And mean. But funny. (in a grown-up voice) I don’t understand these people who play around with ‘avatars’ and have multiple personalities online. I mean, they’re not real, not like real people. At least we know what we are getting when we meet real people? Not that pretend stuff. You can’t trust people online, only flesh and blood, right? Heh. A discussion I had yesterday with Il Paparazzo at AD:TECH Her *clicking away with some big-ass camera* : What’s an avatar?Me: A dolly online that you move around and Continue Reading…

People Interactive Group, which owns matrimonial site Shaadi.com, social networking site Fropper.com and property portal Makaan.com, is believed to have received $12-13 million from Goldman Sachs, reports VC Circle I know I’ve been writing about Shaadi and Sequoia capital and stuff for a couple of years now, but seriously? Dating and wedding sites are the “follow up” networks: developers and games first- at the bleeding edge, dating and wedding second, social media and conversation third, consumer communities fourth… and Continue Reading…

I’m an out and out romantic. An eternal optimist. And I’ve been thinking for a while about an online community for brides. Why? Well, social networks work really well around Rituals and Events, for starters. Plus the site would look sooooo pretty. Aw shucks. I looked at a few of the Australian wedding communities – basically they stuck up a forum and called it a social network. Wedding Centralphpbb forum, and maybe tinyportal CMS?i-do.com.au not sure of the forum software, they have a few toolsthere was another one I can’t think of right now Diary something. None of the sites Continue Reading…

I picked up the book by blogger Belle de Jour around Xmas. Interesting account of a London call girl. Very amusing and a little sad. An “at the coalface” account of the ins and outs of the sex trade. Because of her blog, Belle has won awards, the publishing contract, and now writes a column for a Brit newspaper. She has left one of the oldest professions for an much more tacky one. Heh. I started reading Baghdad Burning today – the book from “Girl Blog From Iraq” Riverbend. Very sad and a little amusing. A human eye account of Continue Reading…
