From Strange Maps: For cartophiles, the main problem with this map is not that interviewer Larry King’s head covers most of Europe, or that the bulky figure of his guest, moviemaker Michael Moore, obscures much of America. The problem is not what it hides, but what it misplaces. See the huge island continent of Australia? Well, you shouldn’t. Most of it should be hidden beneath the desk, in between Messrs King and Moore. But Oz seems to have lost its mooring, drifting north to the latitudes of the Philippines, immediately off Australia’s west coast, and Hawaii, not far from the Continue Reading…

OMG. Oh. My. God. If anyone ever asks you to chair a conference DON’T DO IT! Seriously. It’s really hard work! (And we’ve already established that I’m lazy). I’m involved with a Enterprise 2.0 conference at the Crowne Plaza and we’ve got about 12 speakers per day. My job is to introduce the speakers – but not read their bio out loud because the attendees have already read them – but I don’t know some of these people! So I ask them if they are on Facebook, or submit to YouTube or blog and introduce them that way. Then I Continue Reading…

I’ve never been a fan of Seth Godin. I understand his role – to take what other people have done, wait until it reaches (almost) the mass distribution tipping point and then herald it as a “future” direction – but while it’s important for someone to bring new technologies to incumbents, it still irks that the media treat him like a Prophet. Another case in point: Jobs of the future, #1: Online Community Organizer If you want to hire a union organizer, you probably know what to look for. Someone with resilience, passion, persistence and excellent interpersonal skills. What if Continue Reading…

A month or so ago, I spoke at WebJam about how frustrating it was that organisations setting the agenda for social networks are industry-based (e.g. media and advertising) and that very few are protecting everyday users/members. Add to that, none of these industry groups really provide an online community for their members (industry or otherwise) one wonders how they can protect our social media initiatives when they aren’t participating and don’t “get” it themselves. And industry organisation simply can’t take care of consumer generated content as well as their own needs! So I’m delighted to be part of a ACMA Continue Reading…

AlooTechie put me on to this little slap-a-rama between Wired who claim Yahoo! could of won against Google in the early days and Wired pulls no punches, no sirree. Here’s the Wired article and here’s Yahoo’s response. The key to me was this paragraph: Terry Semel — a legendary Hollywood dealmaker, a guy who didn’t even use email — had not come to Silicon Valley to meekly merge with the geeky boys of Google. He had come to turn Yahoo into the next great media giant. Which might explain why the face of the famously serene CEO was slowly turning Continue Reading…
