Want to know where money will come from, when everything is free? Well, one area is real time events.  Synchronous (happening now, not delayed) means you are either there or you miss out. No place shifting, time shifting, format shifting. So events become important. Sort of the opposite of a few years ago when concerts were free/cheap marketing drives to sell albums. Now albums sell concert tickets. Heh. Don’t believe me? Go price good tickets to see Sting in Concert. I said good tickets, not ones in the back of the stadium, in the next suburb, staring at a dot Continue Reading…

What are your fave wordpress plugins so far? That auto-updater one is great (backs-up then updates) and Comment Luv. What are yours? Oh and those cute coloured boxes are great too. Sociable I think it is? @CoreyObrien (site) likes automatic database backups  – I agree, I like both the backup one, and the auto-updater one. It backs up, then downloads the latest version from WordPress! @tealou (LinkArtist) loves Next Gen Gallery. I had a quick look but I think you have to be heavily into image uploading to require it? @abledragon (wealthydragon) Definitely All-In-One-SEO pack (agree) also wp-security-scan, redirection and Continue Reading…

.. so what is a “social media proprietor”? And how is s/he different from a blogger? Dunno, don’t ask me. Google it…. uh oh, we are both in trouble. The only response from Google on “social media proprietor(s)” are MY presentations. So either they don’t exist, have another name or … I’m the first one to document them. heh. Moving right along… Social media proprietors focus on a number of things that bloggers may not: advertising – display, banner, those little boxy things. classifieds – jobs is popular, the rivers of gold running to social media. merchandising – any old Continue Reading…

… but not on Heritage Media.TweetGrid video (click HIGH DEFINITION on YouTube site if you want to read words clearly) First. The bombings in Mumbai are shocking. Loss of life, fear, a tragedy being played out live is not Entertainment. CNN seems to be covering the hotel damage more than the people lost but to be fair, it’s a visual medium and buildings burning show more than statistics in a broadcast medium. Twitterers are all over it. People are videoing in the streets, taking photos, reporting back to their social networks. CNN coverage is simply not up to scratch, nor Continue Reading…

What do I do in the evenings? Well, I have my avatars pose, act, and otherwise help/hinder Gary Hayes in exploring the 3D web on webpages. Why, what do you do? Here’s Gary’s post Inching Towards the live Web 3.0 – Layered Social Virtual Worlds My work in virtual world give me a unique – I think – perspective in observing the migration of the 3D element out of obvous game engine into overlays. Or at least, I have fun experiencing them. Like this food fight using the RocketOn overlay (a little addon for Firefox etc) on the Sydney Morning Continue Reading…

How I blog, usually under 20 minutes – the process, the pain, the glory. Heh. Maybe it’s interesting, maybe not. First, most ideas have been lurking in my brain for a while. Some years – I’m a bit slow. If you are a regular reader, you’ll see I approach the same questions from different angles time and again. How do we monetize (show value) for user generated content? How do I balance a business need with a customer need in social networks? What happens when people with similar purpose but different value systems meet online? How do companies so easily Continue Reading…

I’m beginning to get nervous around Top Lists.First Question: What if I’m not on it? Well, internationally, I’ve made it onto the Power150 Media and Marketing blog list at AdAge (Advertising Age).#123 Laurel Papworth Social Network Marketing. Globally!… which is quite stressful because every time Technorati stuffs up, I drop 100 points. Talking of Technorati #27,646 blogger (any subject) in the world. Not bad for this blog!… they lost my blog. Recovered it, now lost my fans. So I’ve dropped Authority to 170, yet am in the top 30k of bloggers in the world. Considering there are a hundred million Continue Reading…

It’s intriguing that Slideshare (YouTube for Powerpoint presentations) has collected on it’s main ‘spotlight’ page the powerpoint presentations you probably want to see if you are interested in the economy/fiasco. Google Q3 2008 Earnings Slides View SlideShare presentation or Upload your own. (tags: 2008 q3) I recommend to clients to get together social media assets they might have lying around anyway – old presentations, old ads (check licencing), old recordings of speeches, quarterly earnings reports, and invest in some time in placing them up on the ‘net. Google on this one are explaining their ‘hedge’ strategies. I struggle to understand Continue Reading…

I took an email from a guy who said he was interviewing me for a Cisco newsletter, on social media and small to medium size business. I gave him these answers and then realised: I never checked. He could just be some dude wanting free tips to give to clients. Heh. But I doubt it. Anyway, in case, here are his questions and my answers. Gained from teaching several hundred SMBs for the Department of State and Regional Development for Small Business September etc. Feel free to give your own (answers, that is): 1. What is your definition of social Continue Reading…

Big news on Slashdot today: theodp writes “Confirming paranoid high-schoolers’ fears, a new Kaplan survey reveals that 10% of admissions officers from prestigious schools said they had peeked at sites like Facebook and MySpace to evaluate college-bound seniors. Of those using the profiles, 38% said it had a ‘negative impact’ on the applicant. ‘Today’s application is not just what you send … but whatever they can Google about you,’ said Kaplan’s Jeff Olson. At Notre Dame, assistant provost for enrollment Dan Saracino said he and his staff sometimes come across candidates portraying themselves in a less-than-flattering light. ‘It’s typically inappropriate Continue Reading…

Google has gone into partnership with the ubiquitous cable magnate John Malone and the bank HSBC to give internet access to people in Africa and other nations via LEO satellites. Financial Times: They will today announce an order for 16 low-earth orbit satellites from Thales Alenia Space, the French aerospace group, as the first stage in a $750m project to connect mobile masts in a swath of countries within 45 degrees of the equator to fast broadband networks. Larry Alder, product manager in Google’s alternative access group, said the project could bring the cost of bandwidth in such markets down Continue Reading…

Well, that didn’t take long. Google’s free service Blogspot is hosting Whats Sarah Thinking – a faux Sarah Palin blog. What’s Sarah Thinking?Sarah Palin’s secret diary of her life as a babe, mom, wife, and political animal Sarah Palin, in case you missed out on recent news, is John McCain’s choice as running mate and possible Vice President in the upcoming American elections. Nicknamed Sarah Barracuda she is a funny mix of seemingly opposing ideaologies and activities. It occurs to me that this is the user generated content version of political satire. Yes, I know it was obvious – I’m Continue Reading…

EDIT: Add 215 FriendFeed subs… can’t believe I forgot FF! Why don’t bloggers tell their statistics – visitor, comments, rss feed subscribers, email subs etc – more often, and more publicly? Is it that we think our friends/competitors (often the same in this social media industry, heh) will giggle at our inadequate tools? Is it that though we live by the mantra, niche not broadcast, we feel humbled by The Sydney Morning Herald having (either 350,000 circulation or 1,118,000 readers) on a Saturday, even though they are spread out over Domain, Drive, Spectrum and so on. By the way is Continue Reading…
