I’ve put my name down to speak at AussieChix (thank you Google!) – this is a good event for women to practice public speaking, or to speak about something you are passionate about.

AussieChix microconference in Sydney and Melbourne: October 25 2008

AussieChix aims to help women in the Australian Free Software community participate in the wider community, and one of the ways we’d like to do so is to give women more speaking experience and confidence. Therefore, we have organised an informal speaking event for October 2008: an AussieChix microconference.

Date and time

Saturday October 25, 2008, from 10:30am to 5:00pm. Dinner will follow the event in both locations, details will be announced later.

Location

The microconference will be hosted by Google Australia in Sydney and Melbourne, with a video conference link-up between the two.

Sydney location: Tower 1, Darling Park, 201 Sussex St, Sydney

Melbourne location: Rialto South Tower, Level 27, 525 Collins Street, Melbourne

Thank you to Google Australia for both venues, and for catering on the day.

Attendance

Admission is free. Please register for the event at http://conf.au.linuxchix.org/register-microconference

Attendance at the event is limited by venue capacity. Please note that if we aren’t able to accommodate everyone, we will give preference to female attendees, particularly to those willing to speak or volunteer at the event. Should this be the case, we will notify you at least one week before the event.

Event details

All women attendees are encouraged to consider speaking at this event. Attendees will have the opportunity to put their names down for half-hour talks, fifteen minute talks, and five minute “lightning talks”.

Presenters are free to use PDF, OpenOffice or similar presentation tools (projection facilities will be provided) or to speak extemporaneously.

All attendees are asked to observe the LinuxChix code at this event: be polite, be helpful.

As long as I’m not given a white wine, I should be able to abide by the “be polite, be helpful”. I’ve asked to speak on social currency and monetization. About 15 mins worth. Think they’ll let me?

With Dinner 0 & 1 successfully under their belts, Sydney Girl Geeks invites you to join us for Dinner 2 – happily sponsored by Google. The evening will include a tour Continue Reading…

s’not often you see ‘cocktails’ in a header image I managed to wrangle a VIB pass to Media08. VIB stands for Very Important Blogger. Media08 don’t call me that – I’ve given myself that title – let’s call is a ‘user generated title‘? heh. The organisers of Media08 have been nice enough to treat me like a real journalist. Which means I should probably take up smoking cigarettes and drinking whisky, getting into fights and accepting cash for… oh ok, lets play nicely. Here’s an email from the organisers, God bless their little cotton socks: Hi Laurel, a quick note Continue Reading…

I’ve got two questions for you. And I have tried to get them answered in other places first – I just know that some of you readers are knowledgeable in a couple of areas where I don’t ace it (me? humble? neveh!) Question 1. Why does Google Search (Australia) hate this blog? If you go to google.com and search for social networks australia, this blog comes top. If you go to google.com.au and search for social networks this blog does not exist. And I do mean at all. My crappy world.com.au site comes up eventually but Laurel Papworth – Online Continue Reading…

Never let it be said that I don’t follow through. I blogged the other day about Google having a G’Day California in GooglePlex US to attract employees to come to Australia to work. It’s all happening at 6-9pm today Mountain View California time. I think that’s about 7am to 10am tomorrow our time. Don’t take my word for it though – my ability to do time zone conversions is about as good as my ability take direction and read maps and keep my mouth shut and … : Or is there something we could do online at that time (6-9pm Continue Reading…

I don’t know why, but I find this a tad embarassing. Are we really that low on IT staff in The Land DownUnder? Shouldn’t we be doing something about it? Having babies maybe? And I thought that Google only liked to employ people from Stanford. Sydney Uni is good but it ain’t Ivy League, is it? G’day, California Posted by Alice Boxhall, Software Engineer When I mention I’m an engineer in our Sydney office, I’m often greeted with looks of surprise: it seems many people aren’t aware of our Australian presence. Thus, it is with great pleasure that we are Continue Reading…
