Are you a serious gamer? I can’t believe they are asking that in a job description. Associate Editor, GameSpot AU Are you a serious gamer with flair who wants to work on Australia’s largest gaming Web site? Homeland Stupidity? I’m really intrigued. Not so much by sites with cool and irreverent names, but by their Gonzo Marketing techniques (I loved that book). I should link to the author but do I pick his evil alter ego Rage Boy or his grown up *boring* Wired magazine, Cluetrain Manifesto editor link- guess which one I picked? Not only does Homeland Stupidity have a funny Domain Name, but they also have anti-marketing on their site such as: “Entertaining and insightful” — Jim Harper, director of information policy studies, Cato Institute

2Spare.com (2 Much Time 2 Spare) have a list of the top 87 bad predictions in all sectors. The list has 590 votes. Let me extract out the ones of interest in computing and such – and I’ll add a few at the bottom of recent ones: «640k is enough for everyone.» William F. Gates III «I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.» IBM Chairman Thomas Watson, 1943. «Everything that can be invented has been invented.» Charles H. Duell, an official at the US patent office, 1899. «This antitrust thing will blow over.» Bill Gates, founder Continue Reading…

Follow up to my bloglet rants on realestate.com.au (example from last year) – Glenn Roberts Jr. of Inman News (where Real Estate and Technology Connect) says: Editor’s note: Real estate agents are learning that online community sites can be useful in reaching their target audience. Agents can use community Web sites to raise awareness about their services and drum up local business, while consumers can use the sites to rate, review, recommend and reach agents in their desired locations. This three-part series uncovers how a few savvy agents are using these sites and building their own. I’m not sure about Continue Reading…

From Dion Hinchcliffe, Editor of OpenSource: I call the use of Web 2.0 for business purposes, both internal and customer-facing, Enterprise Web 2.0. At its core, Web 2.0 is about harnessing collective intelligence and most of the rest of the Web 2.0 ideas fall out from this concept. And that highlights a monumental difference between the way the Web was used in the past – and indeed is still largely used today – and the way it works best. Most Web sites still push content one way out to their visitors, don’t have any means to interact with them, or Continue Reading…

Love what’s hapening over at CNet – they are slowly but surely evolving into collaborative shopping site. I had a brief (email) convo with Jeremy R., the snr Editor for Australia. With our recent 1 May redesign, we now offer users the ability to rate products on our site (whether they are reviews or previews of products). Users can give a numerical rating to a product, the pros, cons, bottom line and other comments. Users can also submit talkback for non-product articles to voice their opinion and interact with other users. We’ve got some exciting user generated stuff planned so keep Continue Reading…

I did have high hopes for NowWeAreTalking (see my bloglet and subsequent comments) Telstra’s attempt to build an online community around it’s services. But. The Age (Helen Westerman and Rebecca Urban) has an article, Telstra makes a discourtesy call. TELSTRA’S online mouthpiece nowwearetalking.com.au likes to do some plain speaking. But a recent posting taking a swing at rival Optus regulatory affairs chief Paul Fletcher has caused some internal embarrassment for being a bit too unvarnished. The blog entry was apparently news to site editor, chief Telstra spokesman Rod Bruem, who has just returned from overseas. And he was not happy about it.“We’re Continue Reading…

… is to freedom of speech or is it to not incite war? If we talk about ‘freedom of the press’ well, what is the ‘press’ these days? That naughty Tim Blair is at it again (the link is for his newish address, it would appear that he moves his blog every year or so – read on to see why. ) Ex-editor and current columnist, Aussie Timbo decided to post up those cartoons that caused a furore in the European Muslim community. Now if Alan Jones “leads the charge” (yep, I’m quoting Jonesy) currently with upsetting the Australian Muslim Continue Reading…

Went off with Erietta and Jo S to The Sydney Institute tonight, and gosh! who would’ve thunk that journo’s would have a way with words??!!?? Great speakers, all 3 of ‘em. Matt Price from The Australian introduced the topic – The Gallery: Insular, Intrusive or Indispensable? – and very amusing he was too. No real reference to how media is changing, unlike second speaker Margaret Simons who really seems to get that the business model is not changing but HAS changed. Margaret Simons asked – where’s the money in newspapers? Are journalists and editors defunct? Advertising has been seperated out Continue Reading…
