I’ve identified around 240-250 mobile social networks. I’ve been steadily trying to install their little apps. One after another have failed. I of course, assumed it was the telco blocking ‘em or my mobile was out of date (Nokia N95) or a problem with the security certificates or … But no. My mobile phone date has been set on 2007 since the first week of January. Completely by accident. I haven’t been able to understand why old SMS messages (from late 2007) were listed first, before the 2008 stuff. I couldn’t work out why security certificates were failing. I just Continue Reading…

There’s all sorts of conclusions you can reach about Social Networks, ain’t there? Warning: rant coming up. Funny article in AdNews (always good for a laugh) : Web 2.0 gets nasty (by Nina Lees)Web 2.0 obsessive uptake of social interaction, user generated content control and unbridled interactivity has meant the lunatics are running the asylum. That’s according to Melbourne adman Simon Hammond, chairman of Photon-owned communications agency Belong …the lunatics are running the asylum. That would be us. 21 million Australians – man woman and child – 2.1 million of whom (over 18) have signed up for Facebook. God only knows Continue Reading…

Twitter is a wierd little network tool. You post up information in 140 characters or less. People can then ‘dine in’ – read the updates on the webpage. Or they can ‘Take Out’ – choose to receive your status updates on their mobile or cell phone, on an RSS reader, or get the update elsewhere such as Facebook. (dine in/take out blog post) So my three things: 1. Testimonials and Status Updates (people) One, Twitter is good for getting a brief update on the status of the people in my social network. They are either eating, applying for jobs, moving Continue Reading…

A new study from IpsosInsight (pdf), but I gotta say, this PR blurb makes it look like same-old, same-old. Eg. Europeans are more advanced than Americans with using mobile technology. So, I won’t be paying the 2000 bucks for the report. But if you do, and they’ve just marketed the report poorly, lemme know? I’ll reconsider then. Here is the blurb from their site: New York, NY — Web 2.0 and Social Media is all the rage but what does the Social Networker really look like? And how does visiting a social network really impact technology ownership, mobile phone features, Continue Reading…

I think Google’s project to privatise the moon – cutely called Moon 2.0 – is a big mistake. The Google Lunar X PRIZE seeks to create a global private race to the Moon that excites and involves people around the world and, accelerates space exploration for the benefit of all humanity. The use of space has dramatically enhanced the quality of life and may ultimately lead to solutions to some of the most pressing environmental problems that we face on earth — energy independence and climate change. For more information, please visit www.googlelunarxprize.org It’s not clear enough quickly enough why Continue Reading…

OMG. Oh. My. God. If anyone ever asks you to chair a conference DON’T DO IT! Seriously. It’s really hard work! (And we’ve already established that I’m lazy). I’m involved with a Enterprise 2.0 conference at the Crowne Plaza and we’ve got about 12 speakers per day. My job is to introduce the speakers – but not read their bio out loud because the attendees have already read them – but I don’t know some of these people! So I ask them if they are on Facebook, or submit to YouTube or blog and introduce them that way. Then I Continue Reading…

Seven years ago, I lived in Singapore. I was there for nearly two years. And even back then, their adoption of technology was impressive. If I rang for a taxi, the automated system would ask me if I was 1. calling from home 2. calling from work, or 3. calling from elsewhere. Then it would ask me the same questions about where I wanted to go (home, work or elsewhere). If I was a work and wanted to taxi home, it would auto-give me the plate registration of the pickup cab. I heard that the GPS/LBS services now are such Continue Reading…

Mike *Fang* Seyfang asked an interesting question on Facebook a month or so ago, and got some diverse answers. “Is FaceBook a Walled Garden“. I want to ramble on a lot longer than Facebook let’s me, so am going to think out loud on here. Short Answer: Walled Garden – the host or service provider restricts access to content (e.g. mobile phone content providers), products and services, other members and tends to control navigation. Gated Community – the members restrict or open access to their private profiles, private groups and private products and services by choosing themselves who gets access Continue Reading…

I know I have been blogging on and on and on about TV lately but it’s such an challenging area. I really want to know definitively – will TV survive the next few years? I mean, better than offline newspapers? And if it does survive, what form will it take? How much a part will online, personalisation, and dialogue with and between the media consumers play? The convergence seems to be accelerating since the beginning of the year. Look at this project – four days old- called justin.tv. – Justin wears the camera 24 hours a day, 7 days a Continue Reading…

I haven’t read anything of Stan Beer‘s in a while: Zune and Wi-Fi versus iPhone and carriers? When you hear news that a consortium that includes Microsoft, Google, HP, Dell and Intel, among others has filed to submit a wireless handheld Internet access prototype device developed by Microsoft to the Federal Communications Commission, you know something is up. When you also hear rumours that the device may be based upon a Zune then you suspect a war is brewing and it involves telcos as well. When Steve Jobs took the stage last month at Macworld to announce Apple’s relationship with Cingular, Continue Reading…
