I was poking around, looking for an Australian competitor site to PissedConsumer.com and getsatisfaction.com. Came up with Not Good Enough (both .com.au and .org) – 54,000 members and started in 2002. I love finding these little powerful communities that don’t make it on superficial Top 100 lists. Who wants to sue NGE Offenders MCI TechnologiesMCI TEchnologies – aka Tomato Technologies threated NGE with legal action when they claimed that we had published gripes about their Star Trader software without giving them the right of reply. NGE maintains that it’s not our fault if companies cannot manage their email efficiently. The Continue Reading…
For the last year or so I’ve been speaking – at conferences, in courses, wherever – about the dangers of going to war with your customer. And how the next wave is going to be companies concentrating all their energies on damage control. No more questions of ‘should we be involved in social media’ but ‘what the hell?!! quick, start a blog or something!”. *rolls eyes*. Here’s a typical community:Shall we start one up in Australia? Which Australian brands would head the list – don’t say Telstra, boring – pick another one. Here’s the about us page: Are you PISSED? Continue Reading…

Synopsis. Cannes viral video award was won by Speed Undressing – and mightily pissed off the “client” JC Penney. Agency User Generated Content Anyone? (AUGC) I wrote earlier about Save Our Advertising: speak up, get with it, get engaged with the online community, connect. And I’m speaking to the advertising agencies themselves, not their clients. From Opinionopolis: As someone who works in advertising, and has worked in advertising for well over a decade, this is simply very, very funny. Ever since I can remember the award shows have been dominated… well, not “dominated”, but something darn close… by ads that Continue Reading…

… or evolve it? PHYSICIAN, HEAL THYSELF. The Gruen Transfer is buzzing: As of last night, 6100 spoof ads had been edited, scripted and uploaded to the website by viewers of The Gruen Transfer, the 10-part series which has been watched by more than 1 million viewers each week.(Julian Lee, Sydney Morning Herald, Monster Mash Gives Ad Boss Nightmares) Here’s the clincher for me: But some in the industry are less enthusiastic. Clemenger’s Mr Morgan said the advertising industry has been “led like lambs to the slaughter” to take part in “a slapstick show” and that the industry should have Continue Reading…

Beware: Bloggers don’t like to be ‘engaged’ with in a superficial ‘can you sell by site’ type way. A Pampered Life sucks could be an alternate heading? Or warning: discussion on menstrual cycle community ahead. Heh. I teach courses on how to engage bloggers as part of a social media campaign. But I don’t tell PR and Marketing agencies to do those faux whisper campaigns or to treat bloggers like free advertisers. Here’s the spam mail from A Pampered Life: Dear Laurel Papworth, We recently came upon your site, http://laurelpapworth.com/, and found it extremely helpful and informative for Australian women. I have spoken – publicly at conferences, and here on the blog – over the last couple of years at least, about the need for an unIndustry organisation to protect our content from interactive, new and digital media agencies, amongst others. Here’s another example of why (definatalie): Get FUNK’D! Say no to design contests. FUNK’D have posted in the Red Bubble forums (and I suspect a few others) about their label competition. Please consider absolutely all the entry conditions before entering a design contest like this. From their website’s FAQ: Do you offer a cash prize? We do not offer a Continue Reading…

Funny, every time I see this ‘exclusive BB offer’ now… … I think “walled garden“. When did Exclusive Offer equal Wrong Move ? Why do I have to change to a 3 sim card/package to watch BB, why can’t I watch it anywhere, anytime, on any device? Let’s start up a “Free Big Brother” community… Oh ok, let’s not and say we did. Heh. Tags: anti marketing, Australia, Media, telecommunications, walled garden, exclusive offer, big brother, bb, 3 mobile

I’ve probably blabbed on too much about my personal odyssey to Saudi Arabia the last few days, so I will return you – albeit briefly – to our regularly scheduled programming | View | Upload your own You might find a few slides in here interesting… I’ve been writing, blogging and presenting on the wave of anti-advertising and anti-marketing we can expect in the near future. Those of you who have seen variations on my At War With Your Customer keynotes, know what i am talking about. I would’ve enjoyed this conference in Sydney a lot, lot more if I hadn’t -stupidly – double booked this morning’s presentation with something else. No clue how it happened, I’ve had Glenn booked in since October last year. Grrrr. My bit was the timeline of Continue Reading…

There’s all sorts of conclusions you can reach about Social Networks, ain’t there? Warning: rant coming up. Funny article in AdNews (always good for a laugh) : Web 2.0 gets nasty (by Nina Lees)Web 2.0 obsessive uptake of social interaction, user generated content control and unbridled interactivity has meant the lunatics are running the asylum. That’s according to Melbourne adman Simon Hammond, chairman of Photon-owned communications agency Belong …the lunatics are running the asylum. That would be us. 21 million Australians – man woman and child – 2.1 million of whom (over 18) have signed up for Facebook. God only knows Continue Reading…

Ok you’ve invested time and energy into developing a Facebook application or a widget or whatever. You are competing against other hot marketing types with their company’s social networking strategies. But I bet you didn’t see this one coming… … the consumers en masse take action to block you from their networks. You can block single applications in Facebook: Click on the application name in the request, then on the right sidebar of the app’s description page, there is a “Block Application” link. (from Andrew Harvey) Or you can block everything in Facebook: Ignore All bookmarklet makes ignoring Facebook app Continue Reading…

Facebook: Fitness First Hate Group. Um I’m just social bookmarking this consumer anti-marketing group on Facebook which is not exactly supportive of Fitness First. For my non- Australian readers, Fitness First is a gym and fitness chain. Not only in Australia but this group (1,297 members, 1,298 when I join, in minute) is primarily Australian. The fotos of the gross and dirty toilets at the gym were interesting – I decided not to post them here, in consideration of you, dear reader. : Do tight shirt gelled-up wearing idiots bug you in your face giving free trials to Fitness First?Do Continue Reading…
