Future Tense Radio National

I’m running amok in Adelaide this week. The City of Churches (and strange serial murders involving decapitation, fridges and lawyers/judges) is battening down it’s hatches. Anyway, while I’m here, Radio National is airing a show I appeared on, Recommendation and Profile Advertising:

Future Tense 12 February 2009

Our recommendation…

The power of recommendation drives the viral marketing campaigns that advertisers are increasingly pursuing, and it underpins the very success of social networking sites like Facebook and even Twitter, the micro-blogging site that’s currently the online flavour of the day.

Here’s a panel discussion on recommendation featuring Richard Giles, CEO of a company called Recommendation Ventures; social network strategist Laurel Papworth, and Rebecca Huntley, director of research for Ipsos Mackay.

The transcript of this program will be available by midday on the day following broadcast.

GuestsRichard Giles
CEO, Recommendation Ventures

Rebecca Huntley
Director of Research, Ipsos Mackay

Laurel Papworth
Social network strategist.

You can probably download the podcast later if you missed it.  And it’s @RichardGiles for Richard. I don’t think Rebecca is on Twitter. And me of course @SilkCharm :P

By the way, Adelaide people on Twitter are:

@isaakkwok also @tarale @nikc @theBogan @fang @dnwallace @kerryank @jase88 @aqualung @aussieninja

Back to running amok…

This could be a fascinating exercise in collective Australian imagination, I reckon. Ellenor Cox is a brilliant TV producer, and has come up with a great concept with Scorched!I think the actress is some famous young star off of ABC TV or something? Read the comments on YouTube… funny buzzy little micro-discussions. Place yourself in the Year 2012, and there’s no water left in Sydney – or Melbourne or Adelaide, or anywhere. And ‘cos there’s no water, life changes drastically. Imagine you are a teenager living in a world that is scorched. Channel Nine is picking up the TV show Continue Reading…

Waiting to find out if my lost tickets to Saudi Arabia will resurface today or if the flight will be postponed til tomorrow. Apparently the reservation didn’t get ticketed, whatever that means. Dubai is riding into the rescue. I hope This was sent to me on December 2007, from Personalize Media Gary Hayes, so I guess I owe him one while I fill in time: The rules: 1- Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.2 – People who are tagged need to write a post on their own blog (about their eight things) and post these rules.3 – Continue Reading…

At the very bottom, above the line is “Customer Service Updates” link Well, I didn’t believe it. Foxtel Customer Service has been down for over a week. Nope, I’m not exaggerating. And I don’t mean, busy or hard to get through. I mean “sorry for the inconvenience but we can’t take your call right now.” Clunk. The problem? I organised Foxtel with IQ for my aged parents (they’ll hate that) in Adelaide. But the box blew up around last Thursday 14th. The technician that arrived put in a new box and said the SIM card (or whatever the equivalent in Continue Reading…

Hey! I know him! That’s David N Wallace with his mug on telly. Adelaide boy, uber mensch with kludging bits together. He’s talking about an inclusive community here for dis/abled people – people “making stuff” for people who “need stuff”. What I’m about at LifeKludger’s is the fact that, again, some of the things need modifying. It’s not straight you grab something and it works. And we’re all individuals. But part of loving what your doing is just growing this ecosystem where there’s you know, a huge group of people out there that make things and pull things apart just Continue Reading…

I met a soulmate at Connecting Up 2007 CISA conference in Adelaide – David N Wallace. We had a semi-heated discussion about blogs (they ARE SO 1-2-many!) and then rolled our collective eyes at AUCDs renewed push to create artificial Sensis-sponsored communities around geo-locales. More on that later. Checking out his personal blog and then his other one, I found a link to this article from EurekaStreet about SecondLife and people with disabilities. Which was coincidental because I had a discussion about the good bad and ugly re: virtual world and abilities/disabilities with someone annoying recently. I was trying to Continue Reading…

Well, I’ve been staying in McLaren Vale, South Australia at Flower Fields. The cottage is unbelievably PINK but still, quite restful. Janet is the owner and she is very chatty. VERY. CHATTY. The Flower Fields, McLaren Vale, Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia The Flower Fields, McLaren Vale, Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia BTW apparently TreeHugger job (below), can be done remotely. Hyatt, Adelaide tomorrow – for the CommunIT conference. If you are in Adelaide, stop by and say hello. Or ring me, 0432684992 so we can have a coffee. Cheerio. I was interviewed last week, on video, at Cafe Norton in North Sydney by Nick Hodge. I knew Nick in Adelaide aeons ago, and really wasn’t expecting him to shove a camera in my face while having a “catch up” coffee. Grrrrrrr! :p He’s doing a Geek Stories series for the on10 network(not the Aussie free-to-air channel, but a Microsoft initiative) and it was … an interesting way to have breakfast. Here’s a snippet.Full interview and video is here. Oh and I’m meeting Steven Noble of Hill and Knowlton for coffee next week. We’ll see if he is as geeky in Continue Reading…

I spent some time fishing around for an example of a newspaper of the *future*. Well ok the future ain’t here yet and nor is the technology, not fully but there are some good attempts. I have covered a few user generated newspapers in the past; today lets look at Greensboro101 .com (Citizen’s media) as an interesting example of the genre. Featured blogsThis online newspaper has as its front page a discriminating featured blogs section, while feeds from these blogs make up the main content. Not a massive list of all blogs in the GEO tag area, but a handful Continue Reading…
