As one who has dabbled in the arts of journalism and SEO, it's actually not just a marketing tool per se.
There's some value in learning on page and off page SEO, which is about learning how Google webmaster tools work and also configuring content on a page so it optimised. I think these days the emphasis is on content being found and the context of discovery being relevant in content and context. So although I agree with people's criticisms SEO is bound to help advertisers and marketers it's also a strong tool to ensure the subject is correctly framed and the ease of discovery for the end user is of good quality and rank. It's also important the relevance and index of links is important and backlinks very important too.

I hope somebody told them that SEO is a marketing skill and not about journalism or blogging, and it'll actually make their writing worse.
