Every so often newspapers find out what we already know – that human beings take their main course of facts with a side dish of irony, humour and irreverency. The renaming of the concert “The Big Chill” from “The Wanky Balls Festival” should probably have set off warning bells in the  mind of the editor if not the journalist. Ah well. Live and Learn.

Oh I don’t know what’s going on over at wikipedia (also called “NotNotableEnoughEncyclopedia” or “NotMadeInAmerica Wikipedia) about poor ol’ Sol Trujillo. From IT Wire: Telstra heavies Wikipedia to protect CEO’s imageReports have emerged revealing that, back in March this year, Telstra lawyers wrote to Wikipedia alleging that some parts of the entry on Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo were defamatory and demanding their immediate removal: Which may explain why his entry today is bereft of any reference to the many critical articles about him published in the early days of his Telstra leadership. (There is now a follow-up article on this Continue Reading…

Hey, if you can figure out a login/password, lemme know? But ssshhhh! Oh y’know it’s funny to find out the CIA are using social media for intellipedia: Intellipedia was founded in April 2006 [1] and consists of three wikis running on JWICS, SIPRNet, and Intelink-U. They are used by individuals with appropriate clearances from the 16 agencies of the United States intelligence community and other national-security related organizations, including Combatant Commands and federal departments. The wikis are not open to the public. … well goshdarnit *pouts* I guess if your organisation says they don’t want to use ‘social’ media cos Continue Reading…

EDIT: I had a very nice voicemail from NZ Police Superintendent Hamish McCardle, the officer in charge of developing the new act – he wanted to let us know that they agree about transparency and that today the wiki is back up as a Document of Record. He also mentioned that they got a huge amount of press coverage overseas including the BBC. The Sydney Morning Herald asked me about a New Zealand Wiki that had emerged out of the New Zealand Police Department. I (of course) pretended I was completely up to speed on it all, while madly Googling Continue Reading…

I just HAD to add this in from despair, inc. You can make de-motivator posters. The McKinsey Quarterly has a report out by Jacques R. Bughin. It extrapolates out behaviour on video sharing sites and looks at how a corporate collaborative media group might work. And you can save the .pdf for future reference! Yes, I know these reports are as boring as boogers, but if you are advising a company as their internal Web 2.0 strategist, (or from externally i.e. a competitor of mine ) you need to be able to quote McKinsey and similar. As in “A recent survey Continue Reading…

I spy with my little eye: CalTech graduate student Virgil Griffith built a search tool that traces IP addresses of those who make Wikipedia changes. Photo: Jake Appelbaum Awesome: On November 17th, 2005, an anonymous Wikipedia user deleted 15 paragraphs from an article on e-voting machine-vendor Diebold, excising an entire section critical of the company’s machines. While anonymous, such changes typically leave behind digital fingerprints offering hints about the contributor, such as the location of the computer used to make the edits. In this case, the changes came from an IP address reserved for the corporate offices of Diebold itself. Continue Reading…

Truth in Numbers (hat tip: Jimbo, y’know that wikipedia guy.) It’s user-edited documentary: Truth in Numbers: The Wikipedia Story Welcome to the wiki for “Truth in Numbers: the Wikipedia Story” -a feature documentary site that ANYONE can edit. This is a resource site for the feature documentary about wikipedia and free digital content, due out in Spring 2008. ANYONE can edit, so go ahead! Quick Quick! They want to kill him! Oh poor Frank. *cries* Even if you aren’t much of a fan of Microsoft, you have to like Frank! Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Frank Arrigo Last week, an entry about me was added to Wikipedia. This kicked off a good old fashioned Wikipedia style debate, and the article is being considered for deletion “in accordance with Wikipedia’s deletion policy.“ LOL. I haven’t edited the entry and I didn’t coerce anyone else to contribute to it. Right now, there are 10 deletes (including 4 strong deletes) to 6 keeps. Looks like the days of the article Continue Reading…

We spent waaaay too much time giggling with Ken at CeBIT. He was the guy mooching around on the CSIRO votapedia stand. Votapedia is run on Mediawiki. You set up the survey and then people can ring in to vote using their mobiles . They get the busy tone when they vote, so they don’t pay for the call. Here’s the latest survey: This is an optical illusion but not every one sees it the same way. We are endeavouring to discover what proportion of the population see it which way. After voting you can look at the answer. The Continue Reading…

Update: Michelle’s new site.My friend from Massey University in New Zealand is Michelle Mars. Today she was interviewed by Kate O’Toole at Triple J’s hack program about, of all things, designer vaginas. Have a listen to her recorded interview – it’s an intriguing phenomenon. If you’re a major fan of the Brazillian… you’ll wanna know about this! 2 academics at MASSEY University in New Zealand reckon that the designer vagina has inflitrated pop culture – so much so – that there’s not alot of room for full bush anymore. Are we really such sheep? It reminds me of Snow Crash Continue Reading…

Australian Big Brother have run into some problems – profile security, uploads to YouTube, audience members streaming content to fansites, and 3mobile revealing the new housemates ahead of time. Except for the security issue, none of it will impact the audience numbers and will probably increase it. Set the information free and all that user generated anarchy makes for an even more compelling story… (see SMH for backstory) Yep, their problems are nothing compared to what GMTV in England are facing – Panorama revealed last night: On April 23rd. It had been confirmed that for the past four years. GMTV Continue Reading…
