Twitter just announced @anywhere platform – notice who is missing? Google! Dunno why, Bing is there, but there must be a war forming  between Twits vs Googlers. Anyway here’s my thoughts, right after the Twitter blog/press release:

Monday, March 15, 2010

When we designed Twitter, we took a different approach—we didn’t require a relationship model like that of a social network. Keeping things open meant you could browse our site to read tweets from friends, celebrities, companies, media outlets, fictional characters, and more. You could follow any account and be followed by any account. As a result, companies started interacting with customers, celebrities connected with fans, governments became more transparent, and people started discovering and sharing information in a new, participatory manner.

What do I do in the evenings? Well, I have my avatars pose, act, and otherwise help/hinder Gary Hayes in exploring the 3D web on webpages. Why, what do you do? Here’s Gary’s post Inching Towards the live Web 3.0 – Layered Social Virtual Worlds My work in virtual world give me a unique – I think – perspective in observing the migration of the 3D element out of obvous game engine into overlays. Or at least, I have fun experiencing them. Like this food fight using the RocketOn overlay (a little addon for Firefox etc) on the Sydney Morning Continue Reading…

My little Virtual World in Google’s Lively. Called Social Butterflies – come join us in ‘lively’ discussions. Looking Avatar-Fashionable, of course! Very alpha – not beta. Some things that are dangerous – ability to animate another’s avatar for example? Rape scripts anyone? But being able to embed a world in your blog, Facebook page or homepage? Awesome! We should see our worlds on our mobiles soon, no? Tags: social networks, Online Communities, virtual world, Google Lively, Avatars, web 3.0, google lively, social butterflies

Does Australia have anything similar to this with regards to Innovation and Cross Media and Architecture? Makes our Future Melbourne town planning wiki look less than innovative, no? Ah well. REAL LIFE New York Situated Technologies: The Architectural League of New York The Architectural League of New York invites architects, artists, designers, technologists, engineers, urbanists, or teams thereof, to submit qualifications for an exhibition that will critically explore the evolving relationship between ubiquitous/pervasive computing and urban architecture. The League will commission five to seven teams to develop urban interventions–to be installed in and around New York City in spring 2009–that Continue Reading…

Google App Engine just launched. Get ready, Google has your email and your webhosting and your documents. Now they want your Apps. Read more on TechCrunch. Similar to Amazon S3 you’ll need to find a Python developer. And good luck with that here in Australia -I’ve tried! Found two. One of ‘em was at Barcampsydney.org. The other probably hiding from the stampede wanting his/her services. From Qik. Tags: web 2.0, web 3.0, python, amazon, s3, google app engine, australia, sydney, developers

Not my usual well thought out – *frowns at you* – post , just some jottings on the consumer economy. BANKING 2.0 – social network personal banking and peer to peer loans will take off in a big way. Perhaps not the way Virgin Money/CircleLending, or Zopa or Prosper see it, but it will happen. Screws the banks in the same way Web 1.0 screwed Music industry. Not social media, straight p2p banking sites. RECRUITMENT 2.0 – already recruitment is dead. In Australia, the big recruiters have been busily buying up any small recruitment company that has been able to Continue Reading…

Event: I owe Maxine Sherrin and John Allsop a lot you know: Have your say in the Web Directions South 2008 program Every year the Web Directions conference brings together a group of expert speakers who have been working on interesting projects and finding ingenious and practical solutions to those same challenges the attendees face in their own work. This year we’d love your help with finding out who those experts are. If you can spare 5 minutes to fill in our survey with who and what you’d like to see at Web Directions South in Sydney this September we’re Continue Reading…

Just a brief snack in response to Seth Godin and Lee Hopkins blogs. REAL ESTATE 2.0Do what Seth says: The first is to become the expert in what you do. Which means micro-specialization. Who is the single-best agent for condos in your zip code? Or for single family homes for large families? Who is the one and the only best person to turn to if you’re looking for investment property in this part of town?… The kids at Squidoo just built a promotional tool that lets you get started. Mayor of your zip code is a way to start a Continue Reading…

A slide from a community media presentation I give. Have you ever been asked “…but how can we trust the content online? how do we know the identity of the person writing the review? how do we know the person is a recognised authority on the subject?” I’ve never fully understood this issue of societies ‘established authority’ figures, particularly when it comes to news on events. Maybe because I’ve always questioned traditional media. Made myself very unpopular after the first Gulf War asking people “you don’t really think we won that war, do you?”. I am reading Remote Control – Continue Reading…

Ripped from Zdnet Were you there for the WebJam a few months ago where I talked about the need for an industry organisation – or an unIndustry organisation – to protect content providers and interactive media producers who happened to be you and me? To assert how and where and when we access our profiles, content, swarms, and so on? You’d remember if you were there – I was the one wearing Pink Wings and a Pink Wig. Well Joseph Smarr, Marc Canter, Robert Scoble, and Michael Arrington seem to be heading in the same direction – from Marc Canter’s Continue Reading…

Seven years ago, I lived in Singapore. I was there for nearly two years. And even back then, their adoption of technology was impressive. If I rang for a taxi, the automated system would ask me if I was 1. calling from home 2. calling from work, or 3. calling from elsewhere. Then it would ask me the same questions about where I wanted to go (home, work or elsewhere). If I was a work and wanted to taxi home, it would auto-give me the plate registration of the pickup cab. I heard that the GPS/LBS services now are such Continue Reading…

Breaking News: All Online Data Lost After Internet Crash The Onion Breaking News: All Online Data Lost After Internet Crash *laughs* VERY funny video. Nothing really to do with the stuff I speak on (WebJam) about when web 2.0 will crash and the subsequent loss of user generated content when Google (YouTube) and Yahoo! (Flickr) pull the plug. But still, you get the point. ‘cept the part of the video about the internet not being backed up – I thought that was what we had Google doing? *puzzled*. Hat tip: Ilya Lichtenstein over at neomeme. Anyone heard of a company Continue Reading…

from Duncan Riley over at TechCrunch: Google has announced the launch of Google Gadget Ventures, a new pilot program that will help fund third-party gadget development and gadget-related businesses. Google will offer two types of funding: $5,000 grants for gadget developers who want to improve an existing gadget, and $100,000 seed investments for new gadget-related businesses. Applications will be restricted initially to gadget developers who have more than 250,000 pageviews per week on their gadget. Google aims to “help create an ecosystem where developers can spend more time doing what they love — building great gadgets”. In other words Google Continue Reading…
