Virtual goods in the USA will reach $1.6 billion revenue in 2010 I have a patent in social network economies particularly in user generated virtual goods – which we don’t see a lot of yet. So I tend to keep an eye on how virtual goods are coming along. That’s the problem with patents, you have to get your timing right to develop and launch. When I took out the patent – pre Facebook, pre Twitter – it was impossible to explain to investors how pixel products were going to jump from closed game worlds (Everquest) into the real world. We got a Playstation 3 (on loan!) yesterday. Love it. But this advice is for all games boxes/consoles/whatnots over the “Tis the season to be gaming” holidays. What do I do in the evenings? Well, I have my avatars pose, act, and otherwise help/hinder Gary Hayes in exploring the 3D web on webpages. Why, what do you do? Here’s Gary’s post Inching Towards the live Web 3.0 – Layered Social Virtual Worlds My work in virtual world give me a unique – I think – perspective in observing the migration of the 3D element out of obvous game engine into overlays. Or at least, I have fun experiencing them. Like this food fight using the RocketOn overlay (a little addon for Firefox etc) on the Sydney Morning Continue Reading…

I bet Citizen Murdoch wishes he had WoW to add to the Fox stable. License to print money. Without killing a tree of course: You run a game for around five years, you can’t expect it to be cheap. You’ve got to run servers, pay customer service reps, pay for marketing, etc etc. World of Warcraft’s been running for four years now, so how much has the upkeep cost Blizzard? $200 million. Or, at least that’s what Blizzard disclosed during yesterday’s analyst conference call. That’s it. Staff payroll, hardware support, customer service (which, interestingly, they say is their largest department), Continue Reading…
