I did an interview with Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) about CEOs and C-Level executives on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and other online communities. The interview was ages ago, but it’s just been published. The Pros and Cons of Networking Sites: 1. be honest, be yourself, limit how much your secretary does. (speaking a blog post into a dictaphone to be typed up is one thing, having your whole facebook or linkedin profile updated by someone else is not). be aware of the Invisible Audience. It’s too easy to assume that everyone else is as time poor as you are. Continue Reading…

will trade links Gaping Void always comes up with the goods I was asked on the ABC Radio last night (will link if/when there is a podcast link) to talk about Second Life and … relationships. I ended up describing how to buy a “boy bit or a girl bit” (yep, my words, unfortunately) in Second Life and how they come with animations. … to the mirth of the Twitterati who were following the whole thing live on the ‘net. *sighs* I did learn something from doing a radio show: I’m used to answering questions factually and to the point Continue Reading…

I wish people would stop confusing social media with social networks. Unless every single thing you do online is media, there is a difference! Ah well, here is a study on social health: ABOUT 60% OF ALL ADULTS over 18 use the Web to find health and wellness info, according to new research from iCrossing. And while search is still the dominant channel for accessing that info, Americans are increasingly turning to social media sites–including Wikipedia, blogs, message boards and social networking groups–to educate themselves about specific diseases or conditions. Over two days in December 2007, iCrossing questioned more than Continue Reading…

I signed up for Squidoo today. I’ve tried a few times before, but then would get part of the way through the sign up process, see that they wont’ state what is published publicly and what is not, and give up. I tend to walk away from sites that don’t treat me with respect. I took a deep breath and worked my way through annoyance and signed up anyway. But let me state that registering for a site that insists I give personal information – be it my real name, my email address or my birthdate, and does NOT make Continue Reading…

Rachel Slattery rescued me from social death )I wonder if The Silly Season corporate bashes will be a thing of the past, if Gen Y all work for themselves? Anyway, here’s some non-Christmas parties. hello Class Yum

*cries* why is my iPod Touch doing this? It’s sort of pixellated and colored red/blue when it should be black. So this video is Rihanna singing Umbrella – a black and white video. But you can see – her dark hair is now blue and red. Anything in black seems to be affected. Plus there is a slippage – the video shifts 1/2 an inch to the right and the thing that should be the most-right on the screen is now the most left. Very disconcerting wraparound effect. Anyone know what’s causing it – btw that is a downloaded iTunes Continue Reading…

AdNews asked a bunch of people this question: ( 21 September) Is Facebook Overhyped?Facebook has been described as the media sensation of 2007 and Rupert Murdoch laments its growing numbers against his own earlier social networking paradise, MySpace. Some believe advertisers should drop everything and get involved, but it is Facebook just another trendy site that will give way to the next big thing? Should Advertisers exercise caution? …including Ben Taylor from Naked Communications, Iain MacDonald from Amnesia, Andrew Millar, BlackSheep, and David King, NetX for a response: This was Amanda Wise’s (Tequila) answer about the New Line Noise group: Continue Reading…

Yep Teledildonics is exactly what you think it is. Long before Amy Jo Kim and Jenny Preece wrote their Social Networking bibles in the late ’90s, and long, long before Danah Boyd started making friends on Friendster, Howard Rheingold was writing, speaking and evangelising communities online (late ’80′s). How can you not love a man who writes 20 pages on Teledildonics his book Virtual Reality. How can you not worship a technologist/futurist who opens a chapter with: There was a young man named Kleenewho invented a fucking machineConcave or convex, it fit either sexand was exceedingly easy to clean Ask Continue Reading…

Having a great time at MLC in Sydney. Smallbusinessmonth.nsw.gov.au – hi everyone!

Short and snappy today – I’m supposed to be finishing off a presentation on travel. Not hanging around with you mob. From Flickr: Ok, I give up. A wiki that is not editable, how the hell does that work. yeah, i get it, you can use MediaWiki (technology tool) as a controlled knowledge management system rather than as a wiki (social media tool). But why would you? *puzzled* besides the fact that it’s free… I facebooked this but forgot to blog it (Steve Larkin, news.com.au): THE online encyclopedia Wikipedia is anti-government, Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer says. “My sort of Continue Reading…

Darling, we have to talk. About the ‘c’ word – commitment. I think it’s time we settled down, picked a social network and stuck with it. Oh ok, we can have two or three but do we really need hundreds? Remember that when people like Robert Scoble talk about the importance of aggregating their friends lists on hundreds of social networks, they are acting as a one-man media distibution channel. In other words, they need to get videos, blogs, fotos, articles out to as many of their thousands of fans on as many social networks as possible. You don’t. No, Continue Reading…
