I love the bit about having to be where the students are and using modern tools . Not just education should be saying that! A Singapore-based university lecturer believes educators should harness the potential of social media as it is not only practical, this is in the interest of students who will go into the workforce as “efficient knowledge workers”. Toward this end, he encourages tweeting in class. While some balk at the idea of introducing Twitter into classrooms, Michael Netzley, assistant professor of Corporate Communication Practice at Singapore Management University, told ZDNet Asia in an e-mail interview that educators Continue Reading…
I first started looking down the lists of lists, the Twitter lists list, to see if there were any that I had to remove myself from. One removes oneself from Twitter lists by blocking the person who created the list. Stands to reason. I thought I’d remove myself from any list like “bitch” or “annoying”, and go downhill from there. After all, we are told time and again that online, give people half a chance and they will be negative, right? Negative reviews, negative comments, negative ratings, negative words, negative all the way. Which begs the question that if the Continue Reading…

Your mission – go to the social network Twitter, write a haiku about English summer (or their approximation there of), tweet it, with the hashtag (label) of #kingsplace. From Kinsgplace website: Twitter Welcome to the Great British Summer Haiku Competition! Dear Visitor, Kings Place has teamed up with Network Rail to create the world’s first ‘mobile poetry competition’, focused on neighbouring Kings Cross Station. People travelling into Kings Cross in the mornings are invited to submit Haiku-style poems on the subject of the British Summer from their mobile phones, using Twitter, and gain a chance to see their work displayed on the largest digital advertising Continue Reading…

Quite a different slant from the 40 Social Media Guidelines for Staff, here are Mosman Council laying out their guidelines for following @mosmancouncil on Twitter: Stop following me! If @mosmancouncil is following you and you’d rather we didn’t, please feel free to block us. Be aware that Twitter is a public space on the internet and all interaction is publicly viewable and searchable over time. If you want to keep your Twitter channel private, you can protect your updates. For further assistance go to http://help.twitter.com More of the Twitter Guidelines. On one hand I’m thinking “WTF? A council trying to control the discussion on a 3rd Continue Reading…

Natalie Imbruglia (@natimbruglia) responding to a fan on Twitter. While a number of stars are still using Twitter for broadcast (get an intern to tweet 140 char press releases linking to full press release) more and more are using the online community Twitter in a social way. I blogged about the stoush between Perez Hilton and Ashton Kutcher where Ashton told Perez that basically he was just miffed because the blogger was being disintermediated – why do fans need people to blog/New Idea about celebrities when the celebs will tell us themselves through their own channel? When it’s not Natalie, Continue Reading…

Politically incorrect but funny! From XKcD.com Traditional media will make fun of this intense discussion but remember, it’s human nature to talk about something that is newsworthy – so mainstream media should be offering tools to do that better, not dissing it, right? I started a SocialMediaFlu hashtag (#socialmediaflu) on Twitter – there were zero instances when I started at 3:13pm Sydney time, let’s see where it goes.
