At the very bottom, above the line is “Customer Service Updates” link Well, I didn’t believe it. Foxtel Customer Service has been down for over a week. Nope, I’m not exaggerating. And I don’t mean, busy or hard to get through. I mean “sorry for the inconvenience but we can’t take your call right now.” Clunk. The problem? I organised Foxtel with IQ for my aged parents (they’ll hate that) in Adelaide. But the box blew up around last Thursday 14th. The technician that arrived put in a new box and said the SIM card (or whatever the equivalent in Continue Reading…

A VCAM – user generated ad on current.tvConsumer generated ads. (or User Generated Advertising, if you are old-skool). The one above is a VCAM from current.tvBackground: I’ve spoken about current.tv before: here, let me copy and paste, so much easier: For those of you who’ve never heard of ‘em, current.tv is a user generated channel with user generated ads. Oh shi….vers. I mean consumer generated media. Al Gore is the Chairman. 52 million viewers create the shows and choose the ones to go to air and create the ads and so on. Now consumer generated advertising has been around for Continue Reading…

My addiction to social networks started just before Twin Peaks – 1989 or 1990. I am yet to receive counselling or medical attention. I decided to go looking for my first foray into online communities. Unfortunately, as a lot of them were pre-Internet (walled bulletin boards, not openly available to search on the ‘net), it’s been a challenge. But I did find this from a UseNet NewsGroup in 1991 (the american group, not the aussie one). +^o^+^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-+-o-+| | Murray Chapman muz…@cs.uq.oz.au | || o | | o || | University of Queensland “I’d rather have a bottle in front | Continue Reading…

Who’s handling the launch of the current.tv in Australia, anyone know? I’ve got some ideas – and I don’t want the standard VCAD $1000 bucks for ‘em either. Anyone know the agencies that normally work with Foxtel? I spoke with Kim Williams and he said Foxtel was in discussions with current.tv. That was back in March just as current.tv doubled their subscriber base from 28 million in the US by adding in 25 million viewers from the U.K. For those of you who’ve never heard of ‘em, current.tv is a user generated channel with user generated ads. Oh shi….vers. I Continue Reading…

If you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy or House or E.R. or… – this is YOUR fault. Bloody big drama queens : Those disappointed that reality show Survivor didn’t quite live up to its dramatic title are in luck — contestants on a bizarre new Dutch program will actually be fighting to stay alive. In The Big Donor Show, which is set to air this Friday, a terminally ill cancer patient will select one of three patients to receive her kidneys. Viewers will watch testimonials from the three Dutch contestants, aged between 18 and 40, and send in text message Continue Reading…

The picture has nothing to do with anything, I just thought it was funny. Australian Big Brother have run into some problems – profile security, uploads to YouTube, audience members streaming content to fansites, and 3mobile revealing the new housemates ahead of time. Except for the security issue, none of it will impact the audience numbers and will probably increase it. Set the information free and all that user generated anarchy makes for an even more compelling story… (see SMH for backstory) Yep, their problems are nothing compared to what GMTV in England are facing – Panorama revealed last night: On April 23rd. It had been confirmed that for the past four years. GMTV Continue Reading…

While watching Joost TV shows, you can gaily throw around Emoticons on the show chat channels.Getting a little crowded out there, lots of new TV stuff happening in Australia and beyond. Some time ago, I asked (well, whinged and whined and begged) for a token to join Joost.tv beta. And a few weeks ago, Ugo Cei from Italy sent me the invite. Now, I’ve never met Ugo or even heard of him before, but after googling, I found his blog. So here’s a return link and a thankyou to Ugo – grazie mille, caro. Don’t you just love the way Continue Reading…

Synchronicity is abound on the web. I was chatting with a very smart guy in New Zealand last week, and he mentioned he owns VirtualMe.co.nz. Someone tried to purchase it from him (a big law firm) and we were wondering what it was all about. I thought it might be to do with that avatar customer service concept. I can’t remember if I said so at the time, I was stuffing my face with some very nice pizza, but I would’ve been wrong. Not that you needed to know the last bit, about pizza. Anywaaay, – voila, ITWire to the Continue Reading…

Remember I applied to the beta, and begged people to send me a token (the quick-entry to Joost beta)? Well I still haven’t found one. Am getting quite miffed. :p Here’s a review by the esteemed Frantic Industries: Joost beta reviewed – TV just got a little smarter I installed it, I started it, and in 5 seconds I was watching television. I did it for an hour before I remembered that I’m actually supposed to review the thing. I guess there’s no greater praise, but for those who like details, I’ve included the details as well. So, here’s what Continue Reading…

I shouldn’t have been such a smartypants in the last post- a few minutes ago on TechCrunch: I’ve just joined the “NewTube” media call with NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker and News Corp. COO Peter Chernin. Notes to follow. Chernin is kicking things off. It took him about 2 minutes to say “Web 2.0″ for the first time. Saying this will be the largest premium video network on the web. Extending offer to other distribution partners, wants to work with everyone. Zucker is now on. Talking about importance of “significant IP protection” as a primary goal. Second – this provides Continue Reading…

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks pixel deep in reports on TV- subscription, pay, SMS, IP, download, upload and what not. From Paul Budde to Reeltime to EroticStarSearch to What’s New. Off to the Astra conference and the So You Want your own TV Station panel. Listening to Kim Williams on Foxtel, John Porter on Austar and James Packer on it all. Watching YouTube and Joost and Current.tv and PornoTube. Weeellll, ok, maybe not the last one. And finally someone posts the definitive future of TV: The Viral Video Soup Awards… No Hollywood studio…No budget…No animation experience…No writing experience…No acting Continue Reading…

I’ve spoken a number of times that Google’s patent need to create massive backend services is short sighted, and their unwillingness to move heavily into peer2peer solutions is outdated. Maybe it’s just the thought of acres and acres (literally) of hard drives that creeps me out. Usually I am talking in reference to Google Search vs Social Search. But here’s another model: YouTube servers (Google) versus Joost peer2peer (Skype). What makes me laugh is that Viacom has moved from YouTube (leaving behind a 1 billion dollar lawsuit) and gone to Joost. Lovely wikigoodness: Joost (pronounced ‘juiced’) is an interactive software Continue Reading…
