From Sunday Star Times on Stuff.co.nz – and I’m gonna say up front: there is no point being a prophet if you do not use every means available to be heard, and understood. Wayne Lachore… … emerged from the Coromandel to warn the world of a looming catastrophic collapse of western economies, and the US in particular. Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae were disasters waiting to happen, he wrote in a series of email essays to big-hitters from Prime Minister Helen Clark down. The hugely indebted US was effectively bankrupted, sufficient to cause a global financial vortex. but no one Continue Reading…
Comparing mashup (real/fake footage) videos of the last election to this election. The one that finishes in a week or two. Yep, that one. YouTube was created in February 2005. Three and half years ago. This quick post is about the fact that although we (creators of user generated content) start off amateur and mimicking traditional media, we evolve. So does the technology. And we evolve fast.JibJab was formed in 1999 (wikipedia) and in 2004 (the last election) this was their video This Land featuring George Bush and John Kerry. This Land! | Funny Jokes at JibJab Funny, if a Continue Reading…

Well, that didn’t take long. Google’s free service Blogspot is hosting Whats Sarah Thinking – a faux Sarah Palin blog. What’s Sarah Thinking?Sarah Palin’s secret diary of her life as a babe, mom, wife, and political animal Sarah Palin, in case you missed out on recent news, is John McCain’s choice as running mate and possible Vice President in the upcoming American elections. Nicknamed Sarah Barracuda she is a funny mix of seemingly opposing ideaologies and activities. It occurs to me that this is the user generated content version of political satire. Yes, I know it was obvious – I’m Continue Reading…

I work with government departments on their social media policies. Both politicans and public servants have some of the same issues. Often showing them case studies of other immigration, tax, heritage, whatever in other countries or other States can help them see how they can sell the idea of conversation into their risk averse cultures. It’s all about knowing the fears then gently leading the fearful through the issues, which include staff doing inappropriate things online (get a policy), how to handle negative user opinions, staffing and resource issues (how much time do we have to dedicate), what if no Continue Reading…

Will social media change how we commit events to history from now on? From the About Page: Ushahidi.com is a tool for people who witness acts of violence in Kenya in these post-election times. You can report the incident that you have seen, and it will appear on a map-based view for others to see. We are working with local Kenyan NGO’s to get information and to verify each incident. What you can do is get the word out about Ushahidi so that it’s utilized to it’s full potential. This especially extends to talking to the people that you know Continue Reading…

From today in The Australian: Net activism rattles ArabsFacebook, a site that offers a platform for the advancement of causes, political or otherwise, is quickly turning into a hotbed of activism: a cause for alarm to many autocratic regimes in the Middle East that attempt to curtail its reach by blocking it.(and) In Syria, the Government banned Facebook after an anti-regime email spam campaign was channelled through the site last year. But savvy Syrians, assisted by cyber colleagues abroad, succeeded in breaking through the censorship. Indeed, last November, when Facebook was blocked, it had 28,000 registered Syrian members. Five months Continue Reading…

I received the usual Twitter email today: Well, I don’t blindly follow people so I went to check out PodBlanc. The first thing I check when joining or inviting someone on a social network is their profiles. Then I check friends. Then content. That is: Profiles (who are they?) Friends (how are we connected?) Content (what do they say and do online?) In this case podblanc’s profile said eugenicist. No clue what one of them is. Friends following 567, followed by 37. Not a great sign, I prefer a smaller ratio of difference. Content? Ah this is where it gets Continue Reading…

This one’s doing the rounds of online communities, so you might see it in a few places:Not quite Yes We Can by Obama but interesting use of YouTube by John McCain The Daily Dish likes it. Slate calls it the Barney the purple dinosaur ad. One of the commenters at Ross Douthat said it reminded them of 6th grade sex education films. Me? It starts off well – contention and debate is good – then gets subverted into a support for the military actions overseas. What’s our (Australia) most powerful and charismatic political message by a politician? Will watching and Continue Reading…

| View | Upload your own Barry’s presentation on social media and citizen journalism and how it shapes up online to activism (to PHD Royal Inquisitors and Torturers). Barry Saunders is such a clever clogs: The consensus from the panel was drop the politics, focus on the data analysis – basically I have to develop a working methodology for determining the shape of political discussion online. That might sound boring to one or two people out there, but to me, it’s sex-on-a-stick. Can’t wait to find out what he finds out. There t’was I, minding my own business in World of Warcraft, when suddenly, out of the blue, up jumps Labour MP Keith Vaz (from ITWire) British MP: In modern games you “can rape women” A member of the British parliament has decried modern gaming as a way to live out humanities darkest endeavours. Another example of blatant, ignorant, public stereotyping of the video games industry? According to this report from MCV via Spong , Leciester East Labour MP Keith Vaz has launched a somewhat wobbly attack upon the state of modern gaming during a Private Member’s Bill debate session. Sometimes the first 2500 experts you ask are wrong. Particularly if you only pull in the usual suspects. It might be time to avoid the ones who wrote a book as a way of self promotion and who rely on past glories, and look beyond the first 2500 that spring to mind for the 1000 Summit Nominees. Trevor Cook: If you have a blog post your own issues and ideas and let’s try and stop this from being a club for the usual suspects. Don’t forget to nominate unusual suspects over at Bloggerati. I’m about to list a huge swag. Continue Reading…

Putting to music Barack Obama’s wonderful speech (extend the About window to read the whole Yes We Can speech)hat tip: rosshill.com.auWhich Australian politician, or which Australian speech would you choose to make a mashup of? Anyone seen a good one? No? The above video is an example of why American’s ‘get‘ collaborative communication and our election was ‘the internet as just another marketing channel’. There is a difference but it’s hard to articulate until you start to notice the absences. The black holes. Stuff that announces itself by simply not being there. We know the battle ahead will be long, Continue Reading…
