Here’s the slides from WebDirections – I changed it for you guys, but there’s no point me uploading the same presentation over and over again with slight changes. The Making Links confernece kicked off on Monday 29th with a social networking workshop attended by about 35 people. Smoe of the comments on evaluations: Continue Reading…
Whoever is supposed to be invoicing me – in fact, whoever hasn’t paid me – hurry up and do so, willya? I should be doing my accounts/taxes, not phaffing around on the ‘net, posting stuff to my blog. But while I’m here, this is a great quote, from Andrew Rasiej, a political analyst who runs the Web site techPresident.com, a site that tracks how candidates use the Web and how Internet users are affecting the elections. (from public broadcasting site pbs written by Brian Mason, Online NewsHour): “Online fundraising is a complete misnomer. Money is a byproduct of online communities, Continue Reading…

A month or so ago, I spoke at WebJam about how frustrating it was that organisations setting the agenda for social networks are industry-based (e.g. media and advertising) and that very few are protecting everyday users/members. Add to that, none of these industry groups really provide an online community for their members (industry or otherwise) one wonders how they can protect our social media initiatives when they aren’t participating and don’t “get” it themselves. And industry organisation simply can’t take care of consumer generated content as well as their own needs! So I’m delighted to be part of a ACMA Continue Reading…

Hint: The poledancing bit is at the end, last paragraph. When I spoke about the ‘fourth’ sector impacting Not For Profits, I was mostly talking about people coming together in an informal yet organised way. Informal because they may not take the time to register an Organisation or have a Memorandum of Intent or whatever those bloomin’ things are called. Put up a paypal donation button and ask for a few dollars to run the site (probably takes a couple of hundred dollars a year to manage). And they are organised because free software gives them blogs and forums and event Continue Reading…

Anyone got a couple of hours to spare? It’s for a good cause – I do some work with NAPCAN from time to time As discussed I am looking for someone who can configure a D-Link DFL-210 Firewall and a Bridged DSL2+ modem, either a Netcomm NB5 or a D-Link DSL-502T, whichever works best with the 210. The firewall setup will need to include a DMZ for our intranet server and also VPN tunnels for our remote offices and mobile staff. The DFL-210 is a commercial grade device and has a complex operating system, familiarity with basic DSL modems with Continue Reading…

I spoke at a conference last year about Gonzo Marketing and the move towards underwriting online communities rather than online advertising to static portals as branding model. Here’s a community around supporting people with diabetes in New Zealand. Renima Malhotra and Dr Rosemary Stockdale. Online support for diabetes sufferers The thousands of New Zealanders with diabetes may soon be able to join an online community to seek information and support from others with the condition. On line communities dedicated to people with a wide range of conditions are springing up all over the world. Now researchers based in the Institute Continue Reading…

EDIT (cos I forgot there are non-Australians out there who wander into this blog) Senator Helen Coonan, Federal Minister for umm telecommunications and umm IT things, keynoted at a small conference CommunIT (Not for Profit IT) conference in small-town Adelaide, South Australia on BroadBand for Rural Australia. She spoke and left with no question-time. Ack, I should’ve written this up earlier when it was all fresh and pumping. Is that why blogs are so darn addictive? Anyway, here goes. Politics have to change the way they “use” conferences and events to launch their bits of paper. I’m serious. Preaching to Continue Reading…
