Twitter verified MSF_USA – Doctors without Borders account. However they immediately used it to ‘broadcast’ spam messages. Good cause aside, spam is spam!  Social networks, because they are about people coming together around a Purpose and a Value system, are targets for everyone with a story to peddle.

When Twitter verifies accounts, they are doing so on the basis of “offline” reputation, not online. You can read more about the importance of offering verified accounts in social networks here. But what happens when the Not For Profit with offline credibility misuses that reputation to spam “in a good cause” online? Loss of reputation for all concerned – certainly credibility for the Not for Profit. But also for Twitter. Perhaps Twitter should point new verified accounts to my post on New On Twitter, Tips and Hints? :P Or anyone else tips blog post for that matter.

Do you consider this to be spam?

Hmm  – the response? Twitter not happy. Glebe2037 was at least polite:

WARNING: Politically incorrect statement ahead.

I have a BIG issue with not for profits that wander into Twitter, take the higher moral ground and then treat people like rubbish, all in a “good cause”. We’re ALL here to make the world/community a better place, start living with the rest of us!

Blog Action Day 2009 is going to be on Climate Change – this was initially an Australian initiative.

Stilgherrian goes to Tanzania to train ActionAid workers on social media so they can publish a voice online, but it’s pretty well ignored by Australian journalism – citizen and professiona.

Daniela is staying with blogger (and social diagram maker extraordinaire) David Armano. You can read her story here – basically, escaping  from an abusive marriage, she is a Romanian immigrant, with 3 children to support, one with Down’s Sydnrome. Daniela cleans house when she can for pennies.  David Armano and family are putting the family up at the Armano house. What is interesting is the ClipIn. David tweeted at about 10am this morning Sydney time. By 6:30 tonight, he had $9, 600 – nearly double what he was asking ($5000), and all within a day – well before the February Continue Reading…

Over two million dollars in donations of toys, games, books and cash for sick kids in children’s hospitals across North America and the world have been collected since our inception. This year, we have continued expanding across the country and the globe. With over 45 partner hospitals and more arriving Continue Reading…

You know you want to: Dry July challenges people to last a month without drinking alcohol. We hope you embrace the concept and encourage everyone you know to get involved and take on the challenge of going Dry this July! I tried to comment on this article InsideCRM, but the comment disappeared. Either it vanished in a sea of pixels or it’s pre-moderated (but not explained as such): 6 Easy Ways to Generate Word-of-Mouth Campaigns Creating a buzz is simple if you get inventive, have fun – and follow these tips. By Ellen Smith on June 5, 2008 Start a teaser ad campaign. Countless industries use teaser ads to create interest before a product is even announced.Think of the movies: Teaser previews show a dozen action shots or close-ups of a popular actor without telling viewers the name of the Continue Reading…

Susan Tenby gave evidence to Congress about Second Life. Then, comedian John Stewart made fun of her big pink cat avatar in Second Life. The community responded in quite a funny way, wearing masks of John Stewart. This is not critical of the MSM man, more of homage, and an excuse to take the wave of interest John Stewart generated to push through the Second Life is Good for Not For Profits message. Well that’s my take on it, Susan Tenby didn’t seem that upset… even though apparently he made reference to her (pixel) breasts. (Hat tip: Mike Seyfang) Tags: second Continue Reading…

Priscilla Brice Weller is a leading Web 2.0 evangelist in the Not For Profit Sector in Australia. I even copy her haircut. You don’t need to know that though. Leadership 2008 will be a very interesting year. I have been awarded a place on the Sydney Leadership program and am quite excited, dumbfounded and nervous about it. It will be a chance for me to find out more about how the real world works rather than taking a theoretical view of life from my computer Here’s a blurb about the program that inspired me to apply: Sydney Leadership will open Continue Reading…

I’m feeling lazy today, so a ‘filtering’ post (not original content). Brought to you direct from Twitter blog: Twittering for The Children Yesterday I received this email from one of our Dutch Twitter fans. Biz, This morning, dutch journalist and TV presenter Francisco van Jole (@2525) asked if the dutch twitterazi did anything for the OLPC project. I responded by suggesting we’d have a fund raising day today; every tweet with the term ‘olpc’ in it would count as one euro sponsorship money. Since such laptops cost about 140 euro’s, @2525 said he would buy one if we’d reach 140 Continue Reading…

Bumpz0red because I added in the stats from Hitwise. For each word you get right, we donate 10 grains of rice through the United Nations to help end world hunger.Freerice needs to have a much better backstory/about section than this (is it really for the UN?): FreeRice is a sister site of the world poverty site, Poverty.com. FreeRice has two goals: Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free. This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site. Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or Continue Reading…

Well, this sucks. From AsiaMedia. AUSTRALIA: Web 2.0? Don’t bank on it just yet Australian banks won’t provide latest online financial services, such as wikis or peer-to-peer lending, due to lack of infrastructure and low retention rates of skilled IT staff AUSTRALIAN bank infrastructure is “not robust enough” to deliver secure web 2.0 banking and financial services. That’s the warning last week’s Future of Banking and Financial Services event in Sydney heard but demand and overseas influence will change how banking is done, delegates were told.
