Before the whole shmozzle starts, I thought I’d put the “social media assets” up online (video to youtube, Powerpoint to slideshare and so on). Easier to retweet if you want. The Powerpoint presentation Twitter for Business and AdTech Sydney View more presentations from Laurel Papworth. (tags: atsyd adtech) The video I’ll edit this post later with stuff that comes up from the panel. If you’re not at ad:tech, it won’t mean much unless someone is tweeting it – try #atsyd or #atsyd3 when the time comes (at http://search.twitter.com) LATER: List of Australian brands on Twitter as promised. ABC AFL AMP Continue Reading…

Daniela is staying with blogger (and social diagram maker extraordinaire) David Armano. You can read her story here – basically, escaping  from an abusive marriage, she is a Romanian immigrant, with 3 children to support, one with Down’s Sydnrome. Daniela cleans house when she can for pennies.  David Armano and family are putting the family up at the Armano house. What is interesting is the ClipIn. David tweeted at about 10am this morning Sydney time. By 6:30 tonight, he had $9, 600 – nearly double what he was asking ($5000), and all within a day – well before the February Continue Reading…

.. so what is a “social media proprietor”? And how is s/he different from a blogger? Dunno, don’t ask me. Google it…. uh oh, we are both in trouble. The only response from Google on “social media proprietor(s)” are MY presentations. So either they don’t exist, have another name or … I’m the first one to document them. heh. Moving right along… Social media proprietors focus on a number of things that bloggers may not: advertising – display, banner, those little boxy things. classifieds – jobs is popular, the rivers of gold running to social media. merchandising – any old Continue Reading…

Presentation at PANPA (part) and WebDirections 2008 (full). This article is about the various social media monetization strategies and the powerpoint presentation (embedded) shows some case studies and examples, including social network size, the revenue streams, valuations and profits. Click for full size of Revenues for Social Networks diagram. REVENUE SOURCE: The X Axis (the horizontal one) is whether the money comes to you (you are the social network host or provider) from the members in the community or from external clients such as advertisers or sponsorship from companies. REVENUE FLOW: The Y Axis (vertical one) asks if the money Continue Reading…

I bet Citizen Murdoch wishes he had WoW to add to the Fox stable. License to print money. Without killing a tree of course: You run a game for around five years, you can’t expect it to be cheap. You’ve got to run servers, pay customer service reps, pay for marketing, etc etc. World of Warcraft’s been running for four years now, so how much has the upkeep cost Blizzard? $200 million. Or, at least that’s what Blizzard disclosed during yesterday’s analyst conference call. That’s it. Staff payroll, hardware support, customer service (which, interestingly, they say is their largest department), Continue Reading…

From Advertising Age ( hope they don’t “expire” the article, I hate it when they do that, heaps of interesting stuff there). What Accountants Can Teach You About Using Social Media H&R Block Cast a Wide Net With a Campaign That Included Profiles, Videos, Twitter and Widgets

When people create an economy around an item, it’s because in their eyes, they’ve monetized it. Oh, maybe not in actual currency but hey! if it has importance as a medium of exchange, a store of value or a standard of value then it IS monetized. Even if I’m giving you 3 apples and my teddy bear, I am showing you it’s worth something. Ebay will often tell you what people are trading and therefore, what is valued. (ebay page of twitter sale) I really love my Twitter account but I feel like I haven’t been using it the way Continue Reading…

Peter Thiel, the man behind PayPal, Facebook and Thank You for Smoking… Interesting read – I didn’t agree with his opinions and summations but the facts were interesting. Remember – it’s from Tom Hodgkinson of The Guardian, so it is not going to be rabidly pro- capitalism. : Although the project was initially conceived by media cover star Mark Zuckerberg, the real face behind Facebook is the 40-year-old Silicon Valley venture capitalist and futurist philosopher Peter Thiel. There are only three board members on Facebook, and they are Thiel, Zuckerberg and a third investor called Jim Breyer from a venture Continue Reading…

EDIT: last paragraph – built in modules in Pligg to give back money to citizen journalists (people who submit articles) for Pligg sites like Bloggerati and Kwoff.Quite a lot was written in the late nineties about importance of giving your social network members a way to get some extra cash themselves. Or revenue share with you. It builds loyalty and traction for the community. Handing over a million dollars is one way of gaining members, but enabling members to buy and sell, or take a clip of advertising, or auction or something else will keep the members. It should become Continue Reading…

Ever have one of those days when total strangers (well, to each other anyway) all bring different parts of a puzzle? Conversations that return to a theme? AHA! moments abound? Today has been like that – about virtual economies and currencies. IGE Sued By World Of Warcraft Player In a new twist on an old MMOG debate, gold-farming company IGE has been sued by a World of Warcraft player.Instigated by long-time World of Warcraft player Antonio Hernandez, the class action suit filed against IGE claims that the company made a “calculated decision to reap substantial profits by knowingly interfering with Continue Reading…

Anyone watch the Second Life thingie on 60 minutes last night? You any the wiser? I missed it – did they mention that only 3000 Australians have signed up? Globally there are 7 million avatars – but only 1 and 1/2 million have logged in the last 60 days and I never see more than 40,000 online at a time. How many of the Australian 3000 are in that 40,000? You do the math. (I get 15. And they aren’t all sitting around ABC or BigPuddle). Another Australian TV program beat-up I gather? This Four Corners one was quite good. Continue Reading…

When I was in primary school there was another little girl who’s birthday was around the same day as mine. (Who said Aries are competitive? pfft.) Instead of being friends, we came to hate each other because it was always a competition to see who in class was buddies with whom. “You can’t go to her party, you’re my friend, you have to come to mine!!” *tantrum* Oh the Tears! the Drama! The Heartbreak! Thankfully it stopped when we reached 30. So I completely commiserate with eBay, the poor loves. eBay yanks ads from Google AdWords network Online auctioneer eBay Continue Reading…
