While you are reading the presentation outline below I’d like you to think about the Twitter change today. Today Twitter turned off “see replies to those I’m not following”. Therefore if I’m (@SilkCharm) having a conversation with @garyphayes, and you follow me but not him, you used to see my conversation, even though it’s “one sided” for you. Twitter are planning changing it – you won’t see my tweet at all. Now Gone – you don’t have the option to opt-in to see their conversation anymore. This has sever impact for Twitters “ripple-ability”. Read below and think about the fact Continue Reading…

From The Chicago Tribune: Colonel Sanders look-alike Bob Thompson helps a repair crew in Louisville “re-fresh” one of the estimated 350 million potholes nationwide. (KFC Corporation photo/ March 24, 2009) There is a danger on social networks that sell spotlight advertising of the same kind of backlash. We’ll Everybody needs a little KFC. But maybe not Chicago. Qantas deleting frequent flyer points – choose or lose. Oh look, is there a loyalty program out there that doesn’t treat you like you are a nuisance? It’s almost as though the points are rewards but “carrots” to be dangled in front of our noses. Don’t know why, but most loyalty programs cause me to feel distinctly disloyal. Everytime they say “no” to me – no to upgrades, no to changes, no you can’t have points, no you can’t use points, no you can’t give points to someone else, no no no – I want to scream NO back to Continue Reading…

Want to know where money will come from, when everything is free? Well, one area is real time events. Synchronous (happening now, not delayed) means you are either there or you miss out. No place shifting, time shifting, format shifting. So events become important. Sort of the opposite of a few years ago when concerts were free/cheap marketing drives to sell albums. Now albums sell concert tickets. Heh. Don’t believe me? Go price good tickets to see Sting in Concert. I said good tickets, not ones in the back of the stadium, in the next suburb, staring at a dot Continue Reading…

.. so what is a “social media proprietor”? And how is s/he different from a blogger? Dunno, don’t ask me. Google it…. uh oh, we are both in trouble. The only response from Google on “social media proprietor(s)” are MY presentations. So either they don’t exist, have another name or … I’m the first one to document them. heh. Moving right along… Social media proprietors focus on a number of things that bloggers may not: advertising – display, banner, those little boxy things. classifieds – jobs is popular, the rivers of gold running to social media. merchandising – any old Continue Reading…

From Sunday Star Times on Stuff.co.nz – and I’m gonna say up front: there is no point being a prophet if you do not use every means available to be heard, and understood. Wayne Lachore… … emerged from the Coromandel to warn the world of a looming catastrophic collapse of western economies, and the US in particular. Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae were disasters waiting to happen, he wrote in a series of email essays to big-hitters from Prime Minister Helen Clark down. The hugely indebted US was effectively bankrupted, sufficient to cause a global financial vortex. but no one Continue Reading…

It’s intriguing that Slideshare (YouTube for Powerpoint presentations) has collected on it’s main ‘spotlight’ page the powerpoint presentations you probably want to see if you are interested in the economy/fiasco. Google Q3 2008 Earnings Slides View SlideShare presentation or Upload your own. Google on this one are explaining their ‘hedge’ strategies. I struggle to understand Continue Reading…

If the company you work for, wants to lay marketing staff off, or cut marketing budget (right as you are in the middle of implementing blogging and wikis and Facebook uber stuff), tell ‘em no. 1. Research the customer. Instead of cutting the market research budget, you need to know more than ever how consumers are redefining value and responding to the recession. Price elasticity curves are changing. Consumers take more time searching for durable goods and negotiate harder at the point of sale. They are more willing to postpone purchases, trade down, or buy less. Must-have features of yesterday Continue Reading…
