NB: There’s an EDIT UPDATE at the bottom about this debate. Click on it, I dare you. “Forget Objective Reporting” AFR Feb 2006 I feel sorry for The Australian Financial Review, I really do. Out of all mainstream media, they get this web 2.0 thing the least. And it’s our only daily financial newspaper. *sad* The poor poppets. That clipping above is from February 2006 – I wrote to AFR saying that (in case you can’t read the picture): “…aren’t collaborative journalism, web 2.0, user generated content , personalised media and so on and so forth, the buzz words for Continue Reading…

I don’t think that anyone has really realised how much the web 2.0 stuff is going to affect law and the courts and judgements on defamation and privacy. If web 1.0 was bad enough – html savvy pissed off punters creating a page that a handful of people could find and view, what do we think the limits are of everyone from 11 year olds up creating anti-marketing, anti-advertising, anti-privacy campaigns? From the SMH: A Brazilian judge has ordered YouTube to find a way to stop Brazilians from viewing steamy footage of supermodel Daniela Cicarelli and her boyfriend on the Continue Reading…

From Time Magazine: Time’s Person of the Year: YouIn 2006, the World Wide Web became a tool for bringing together the small contributions of millions of people and making them matterBy LEV GROSSMAN The “Great Man” theory of history is usually attributed to the Scottish philosopher Thomas Carlyle, who wrote that “the history of the world is but the biography of great men.” He believed that it is the few, the powerful and the famous who shape our collective destiny as a species. That theory took a serious beating this year. it continues Who are these people? Seriously, who actually Continue Reading…

The Walkley Awards are all about Excellence in Journalism. And now, one assumes, Pugilism. So after the kerfuffle between Crikey’s Stephen Mayne and NewsCorp’s Glenn Milne we ask – what award will Glenn Milne will receive? “Come on settle down, it’s nothing special – just another pissed journo,” he(Stephen Mayne) told the audience. He appeared unfazed by the incident and said he had a special announcement to make on behalf of Rupert Murdoch. “That is the former Sunday Telegraph political correspondent Glenn Milne, sponsored by Fosters,” he said Glenn Milne waltzing with security(?) at the Walkley Awards. If you buy today’s Sydney Morning Herald, you will see that I have a couple of paragraphs – go to The Guide/Icon, open to the middle (yes where the staples are!) and the article by Neena Bhandari called Upgrade Your Brain. I can’t find it on the SMH website (typical!) but if I do, I’ll link it here. It’s just guff about wiki and blogs and user generated content and how my courses are so critical for anyone wanting to get ahead in marketing today. Heh. Neena’s really nice BTW. Thought you should know that. And, I’m teaching another Social Continue Reading…

Some people remain unconvinced that it is not only media that benefits from passionate, committed, intelligent amateurs. But they ain’t gonna stop me. Both banking and medicine have a lot to learn from consumers as co-creators. Don’t believe me? Too bad, I’ve been doing some research… For some more background, you might want to read my old bloglet about Google setting up Google Health portal first. Or not, it’s up to you, and not necessary. Most of us know the story of Lorenzo’s Oil (from wiki) Lorenzo’s Oil is a 1992 dramatic film directed by George Miller. It is based Continue Reading…

I wandered into The Sydney Institute’s function on Monday night, where the speaker was Mark Scott, the new MD and Editor-in-Chief at the ABC. Mark is from Fairfax (and government and education). The ABC was announcing it’s new editorial guidelines. (script here) Both the tone and the content were strong statements. Mark clearly was laying down the law – bearding poor ol Aunties critics in the lion’s den. And I very deliberately wanted to speak about this issue here, at The Sydney Institute. It isn’t just in the hope that by being my gracious hosts tonight, Gerard and Anne Henderson Continue Reading…

Hello my darlins’ I’m working hard at the moment on a couple of projects including this month’s two courses – citizen journalism and a social networks marketing course – at the Uni of Sydney. Come sign up! Anyway, on with the show! Phil Windley’s Technometria had this: Online Communities and Health Care Last week I put up a show from the Zend PHP conference that featured Adam Bosworth talking about “content” and the fact that it’s still King. Adam is thought provoking and entertaining. This talk is no different. Interestingly, Adam talks about content in the context of community (no Continue Reading…

The ABC has been having a DigitalFutures couple of days. I made a comment here: Citizen PartnersOur questions: A)How would the ABC look with a partnership with citizens?B)How would the ABC incorporate citizen participation without comprising the public and civic mission?C)How would it redefine its community and audiences?D)What challenges would this pose for editorial practices and policies? Why don’t you go and show ‘em what commuication and dialogue are all about? *pushes* Technorati Tags Online Communities, Australia, ABC, Digital Futures
