  1. I rarely get to interview stage.

It’s partly because I refuse to send a standard CV/Resume. I send potential employers my writing(s). They are my CV/Resume. It’s partly because I’m such a psycopath/sociopath (but that’s what makes me such a great writer).

My last interview was on Skype for a Writing/Social Media/PR Consultancy job.

I was upfront. I have total confidence in my writing skills, but didn’t pretend I was any Social Media expert. I just said, I use Social Media a bit, but I’m a fast learner.

The next interview I get? I’ll be able to truthfully say, I know shitloads about Social Media.

That’s the value of working 100/hr weeks for three months for $200. Sometimes the intangibles you get out of a job outweigh the wage.

  2. Social media is such a huge part of your online reputation. I like to think of my social presence as a ‘social CV’ and never post anything online that I wouldn’t want a prospective employer to see. While some people may think it’s unfair that employers screen potential candidates via google, I like to think of it as an opportunity.
