Sitting in my hotel room in Jeddah, trying to resist the lure of waffles with strawberries. Found this article in Gulf Business magazine: Behind the VeilTo the average observer in the West, women in the Middle East are a repressed gender, confined to their homes by the ‘conservative’ male. The truth is a bit different. There has been a dramatic shift in Arab attitudes over the past decade, with women in the Middle East now charging up the corporate ladder and finding success on their own terms. The article then goes on to talk about women entrepreneurs in the region, Continue Reading…

Four stories of chandelier anyone? First of all, 2webcrew live podcast with comments channel is about to start. I’m usually on there, but all this travelling has meant I’ve not been able to do it for 3 weeks, but still, they are doing a fabbo job! Duncan Riley from TechCrunch, Cameron Reilly from The Podcast Network and Bronwen Clune of Norg Newspapers. And the usually assorted wierdos and geeks. Background first, then Day One. And day two is about Women and Identity in Saudi Arabia. Day Three and Four have been similar to each other. You might like to know: Continue Reading…

Interesting article re: leveraging user generated content in and around games. You really should read the whole thing at clickz but here’s some snippets: Reinforcing the value of UGGC, Cliff Bleszinski, lead designer for “Gears of War,” said, “For a PC title that expects any sort of longevity in sales, playability, and online time, a mod community can be extremely important. Having thousands of fans of the game purchase and then modify the title while exchanging the fruits of their labor can turn a simple game into its own gaming platform.” (clickz) You have to understand the Chuck Norris Facts Continue Reading…

I’ve probably blabbed on too much about my personal odyssey to Saudi Arabia the last few days, so I will return you – albeit briefly – to our regularly scheduled programming | View | Upload your own You might find a few slides in here interesting… I’ve been writing, blogging and presenting on the wave of anti-advertising and anti-marketing we can expect in the near future. Those of you who have seen variations on my At War With Your Customer keynotes, know what i am talking about. At the moment, we write bitchy little scraps in blogs about poor service, Continue Reading…

Background first, then Day One. Oh and thanks to Shel Israel for writing about and understanding the importance of this project. And Stilgherrian (hmmm, I think) So Sunday is a working day in Saudi – the weekend is Thursday and Friday. I had concerns about travelling from the Hilton Hotel to the Effat College (private woman’s University) as we were two women being driven by a male taxi driver. But it was ok – except there is bedlam on the roads here and one really big smash- up. The press conference was held in the main auditorium. All women except Continue Reading…

(Background to the “New Arab Woman’s” project) Well two things happened. One was before I even got to Saudi Arabia. I arrived in Dubai airport and realised my Nokia 95 wasn’t picking up a service provider. Somehow international roaming had got switched off. I had it on when I went to New Zealand a while ago, but since then I had upgraded – certainly a new SIM card cos the Optus guys told me it was better to have U-Sim or whatever it was called. I was told – promised actually – that the settings would be the same, but Continue Reading…

I was trying to navigate my way around my blog – which had turned to Arabic menus at the top – and accidentally flagged it as having “objectionable content”. Now, I’m not the best blogger in the world, but I doubt I shoulda flagged my own blog as bad ‘un. I’ve since turned the blog back into english – see below- but it won’t unflag. Annoying… So I thought I’d write a post in case anyone gets stuck overseas and their settings for ‘English’ don’t hold. Ummm Google? dear? Just because I am in Saudi Arabia doesn’t mean I suddenly Continue Reading…

Waiting to find out if my lost tickets to Saudi Arabia will resurface today or if the flight will be postponed til tomorrow. Apparently the reservation didn’t get ticketed, whatever that means. Dubai is riding into the rescue. I hope This was sent to me on December 2007, from Personalize Media Gary Hayes, so I guess I owe him one while I fill in time: The rules: 1- Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.2 – People who are tagged need to write a post on their own blog (about their eight things) and post these rules.3 – Continue Reading…

AOL in talks to acquire Bebo: AOL has entered into an agreement to acquire Bebo for US$850 million in cash, but the deal could upset Yahoo!7′s Australian ad-sales partnership with the third-ranked social networking site. Bebo grew its worldwide monthly audience 76% to 22 million in the year to January 2008, but still lags far behind Facebook’s 100 million visitors (up 305% year-on-year) and MySpace’s 109 million visitors (up 15% year-on-year), according to international online measurement firm comScore. (read more at AdNews) It’s our content that’s providing the menu. Little fishies, little fishies, swim faster. Big ol’ sharks are circling. Continue Reading…

Journey to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – I fly out late tonight, Sydney time. Heigh ho, Heigh ho, it’s off to Jeddah I go. In December 2006, a major Middle East broadcaster had a writing competition. They invited young Arab women to write in and say why they mattered. As in “why do Arab women matter”. The prize was an internship at the company, working with their Arab Women’s channel and other media properties. Over 2000 women responded. HRH Princess Abta Al Saud attended the ceremony and 17,000 women signed up for an as yet unformed online community to support Continue Reading…

At 1:15 is the New Zealand one – really really funny. And mean. But funny. (in a grown-up voice) I don’t understand these people who play around with ‘avatars’ and have multiple personalities online. I mean, they’re not real, not like real people. At least we know what we are getting when we meet real people? Not that pretend stuff. You can’t trust people online, only flesh and blood, right? Heh. A discussion I had yesterday with Il Paparazzo at AD:TECH Her *clicking away with some big-ass camera* : What’s an avatar?Me: A dolly online that you move around and Continue Reading…

A little behind-the-firewall snippet: Best Buy (like Harvey Norman’s only bigger, in the USA?) have built a social network for internal use. I loved this comment: Listen, Provide, Learn Getting contributions from your community and encouraging interaction are critical elements of an internal corporate Web site. If people don’t use the site, you have a corporate platform that, according to Bendt, “sucks.” After the first version of the BlueShirt Nation social platform, as it was called, Bendt and Koelling were told by a handful of beta users that it needed some work. Koelling was a bit more descriptive: “They said Continue Reading…

Brought to You by The So Bad it’s Good Department: Rap done by the senior management of Singapore’s Media Development Authority.Hat Tip: Katie ChatfieldWhen we enter into a relationship with the customer, a real one, with two way dialogue, preaching and lecturing sends ‘em running for the hills, or leaves them pouting and grizzling. But when we approach the relationship with fun and humour -and when did marketing stop being about having fun with the consumer? – a warmth, loyalty and sense of community between us develops. Fun video, highly technical information with big boring slabs of policy-speak all sexed Continue Reading…
