Steven Lewis of Zest Digital masquerading as a Lollipop Lady? NO! Telling Aussie media to “Just stop it already”. My heart is breaking… I, like most bloggers, have a love/hate relationship with the Australian traditional media. We LOVE them: listen to everything they say, hang on every word, pore over every article looking for meaning and direction and real communication. We tell them time and again how to communicate back to us, how to market to us and we are overjoyed if they pay us any attention at all (particularly if they quote the blogger on TV or in newspapers). I spy with my little eye: CalTech graduate student Virgil Griffith built a search tool that traces IP addresses of those who make Wikipedia changes. Photo: Jake Appelbaum Awesome: On November 17th, 2005, an anonymous Wikipedia user deleted 15 paragraphs from an article on e-voting machine-vendor Diebold, excising an entire section critical of the company’s machines. While anonymous, such changes typically leave behind digital fingerprints offering hints about the contributor, such as the location of the computer used to make the edits. In this case, the changes came from an IP address reserved for the corporate offices of Diebold itself. Continue Reading…

This one caught my eye on the Seek.com.au jobs feed on the right hand side of this bloggy. I wonder if it would suit someone who is looking for experience in social networks but doesn’t want to take a 9-5 job in the area yet? Plus it would keep you out of trouble/off Facebook on the weekends. I love wanky titles.Sooooooo, how’s my baby, the site Bloggerati Australia coming along? You need a little update, methinks. First, it’s worked out better than I expected. My primary purpose was personal – to bookmark any and all articles and sites I came across that were Web 2.0 and Australia/New Zealand focussed. I initially was just going to bookmark them in del.icio.us but it seemed clunky. Plus, my life’s mantra is “Be lazy, have the network do it for you”. This is the meanest thing I’ve seen a long while. Really cruel. Gob-smackingly evil. Vile. And absolutely friggin’ brilliant. Schooled is (American I think) where you play practical jokes on each other the day back at school. Only this time, the teachers get their own back. I’m not saying anymore – watch the video and hang in there past the initial naff pranks to get to the main one. Students at a New Jersey high school are tricked into believing their music department will be abolished if they do not pass a series of increasingly twisted, “state-mandated” tests. The final Continue Reading…

Federal Member for Corangamite Stewart McArthur.Photo: Everard Himmelreich Golly: MP Lashes out at fake MySpace profile: A federal MP has hit out at MySpace for allowing a “offensive, vulgar and inflammatory” fake site to be set up in his name. MySpace is a social networking website that allows people to set up free personalised web pages. Stewart McArthur, the government’s deputy whip, said the fake page – which has since been taken down – had included his photograph. The unauthorised website portrayed Mr McArthur as a vicious homophobe who wanted to become prime minister, according to local media. Yep it Continue Reading…

NB: There’s an EDIT UPDATE at the bottom about this debate. Click on it, I dare you. “Forget Objective Reporting” AFR Feb 2006 I feel sorry for The Australian Financial Review, I really do. Out of all mainstream media, they get this web 2.0 thing the least. And it’s our only daily financial newspaper. *sad* The poor poppets. That clipping above is from February 2006 – I wrote to AFR saying that (in case you can’t read the picture): “…aren’t collaborative journalism, web 2.0, user generated content , personalised media and so on and so forth, the buzz words for Continue Reading…

Video here at YouTube Next time someone tells you MySpace and YouTube are for emo-goth, time wasting, geeky nerdy kids, say “Yeah and some of ‘em are 90 years old.” Then point them to the The Zimmers.Click to go to their MySpace page. Are you noticing a trend in traditional marketing towards ‘user generated content’ simplicity yet? Funny how we didn’t really need sophisticated selling mechanisms all along – if you’ve got a story to tell, a position to defend, a point to make – well, make it already! If you want to waste some more time (and you’d probably already Continue Reading…

Darling, we have to talk. About the ‘c’ word – commitment. I think it’s time we settled down, picked a social network and stuck with it. Oh ok, we can have two or three but do we really need hundreds? Remember that when people like Robert Scoble talk about the importance of aggregating their friends lists on hundreds of social networks, they are acting as a one-man media distibution channel. In other words, they need to get videos, blogs, fotos, articles out to as many of their thousands of fans on as many social networks as possible. You don’t. No, Continue Reading…

I found this through a medical student’s blog -from Hungary, no less. It’s The Medical Journal of Australia’s Web 2.0 report: The effect of Web 2.0 on the future of medical practice and education: Darwikinian evolution or folksonomic revolution?by Rick McLean, Brian H Richards and Janet I Wardman Abstract Web 2.0 is a term describing new collaborative Internet applications. The primary difference from the original World Wide Web is greater user participation in developing and managing content, which changes the nature and value of the information. Key elements of Web 2.0 include: Really Simple Syndication (RSS) to rapidly disseminate awareness Continue Reading…

Maxine Sherrin from WebDirections just sent me a reminder. Apparently, I’m one of the host/ess with the most/ess tomorrow night at Geek Trivia Night: I have no idea what that entails. Hopefully just floating the room, avoiding the difficult questions such as “what does URL stand for” and looking gorgeous, with chardy in hand. They’ve been filling fast, but there are still places available at the first Sydney Web Trivia Night on August 9. Brought to you by News Digital Media and Web Directions, come along to this free night of trivia where you’ll definitely be in with a chance, Continue Reading…

I found Kevin07 to be rather sweet. There’s a bit of irreverence about the whole site. No, I didn’t say irrelevance. The URL – it’s for Kevin Rudd, which I wasn’t aware of when I was directed there by a Facebook person – shouldn’t really use a dotcom. Seriously, he’s Australian, it’s an Australian election, why not use dotcomdotau? Resolve the kevin07.com to an addon domain. It occurred to me it might be a fansite, but no, this is an authorised site.Tell Your Friends – a contact form with friends email and yours.Sign a Petition – I signed the Education Continue Reading…

PuzzleBee jigsaw puzzle app from TheBroth inside Facebook – nothing to do with the handcuffs/alcohol TheBroth is a collaborative art community. I wasn’t too sure what that meant at first, but it seems you can enter a room and work with others on a piece of art. Or, in my case, just splash tiles around. TheBroth was set up by Sue Zann Toh and Markus Weichselbaum in Perth. There must be something in the water over there – Perth is rockin’, Web 2.0-wise. Hmmm maybe I should move there. Here’s the Mosaic room: See those little itsybitsy tiles? Drag them Continue Reading…
