Malcolm Turnbull, without budgie smugglers Malcolm Turnbull, Australian politician extraordinaire. Malcolm who blogs (oh ok, it’s his pets who blog, but we can’t vote for them). Malcolm, our soon to be Prime Minister, no? He-who-has-a-Facebook-page. So the question is this:Zombie or …. Vampire you make a hot Vampire! Tell the world! Decisions. Decisions. Can’t be of-the-community yet apart-from-the-community can one? Embrace it or reject it. In the future, pollies will be judged by how well they embrace rather than use social networks. But it’s easy to forgive Malcolm any mistakes right at this point in time (even if he never Continue Reading…

By way of Kay Smoljak (on Twitter via Facebook, oddly enough): Clive Thompson on How Twitter Creates a Social Sixth Sense Twitter is the app that everyone loves to hate. Odds are you’ve noticed people — probably much younger than you — manically using Twitter, a tool that lets you post brief updates about your everyday thoughts and activities to the Web via browser, cell phone, or IM. The messages are limited to 140 characters, so they lean toward pithy, haiku-like utterances. When I dropped by the main Twitter page, people had posted notes like “Doing lunch and picking up Continue Reading…

Anyone here use Facebook? *poke* poke* From Ad Age: 23-Year-Old Mark Zuckerberg Has Google Sweating Idealist Entrepreneur’s Facebook Offers Something Search Doesn’t–Distribution By Abbey Klaassen Just as Google has become what some people call the operating system for search, Facebook is turning itself into the operating system for social networking. While Google knows what millions of people are searching for, Facebook has something the search giant hasn’t been able to grow: a network of connections between people that creates a viral distribution platform unrivaled by any portal or search engine. In late May, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the social Continue Reading…

Well golly gosh, The Australian Financial Review has got a crap site. I would’ve probably paid for this article but it’s not clear it’s even on there. I couldn’t find a search button. Went out in the pouring rain to buy the paper instead. I think it’s the last time I’ll do that… The number of Australian’s using blogs has soared over the past year, but companies are still struggling to find a way use one of the fastest growing parts of the internet as a marketing tool. – do you think they should do one of my courses, or Continue Reading…

I’m an out and out romantic. An eternal optimist. And I’ve been thinking for a while about an online community for brides. Why? Well, social networks work really well around Rituals and Events, for starters. Plus the site would look sooooo pretty. Aw shucks. I looked at a few of the Australian wedding communities – basically they stuck up a forum and called it a social network. Wedding Centralphpbb forum, and maybe tinyportal CMS?i-do.com.au not sure of the forum software, they have a few toolsthere was another one I can’t think of right now Diary something. None of the sites Continue Reading…

Linkau have launched an Australian social network. I don’t know how clearly you can see from the picture above (from the Sydney portal) but it’s very MySpace-y. No attempt to pull out information into an aggregated page. No real attempt to add any value to the Australian MySpace proposition as far as I can see, except a limited attempt at swarming down into local portal (doors) into local area content. The usual issue. If you build it will they come? Is your purpose clearly defined. And no, the purpose isn’t to “have as many banner ads as possible”. It’s a Continue Reading…

Who’s Australia’s most interesting VC company? Anyway, thought some of you might find this informative. From Sequoia, who have a list of what they look for when funding startups: Elements ofSustainable Companies Start-ups with these characteristics often foretells the success of a business and the likelihood of it becoming a sustainable, enduring company. Rugby. NOT my cup of tea. But given how many people like sport and stuff, I thought in the interest of balanced reporting I should post about Rugby and online communities. Wait! hang on a minute! This is a blog – balanced reporting my ar$e! :p The Telegraph is planning to develop a social network for the Rugby World Cup in September. The company is to use its ‘My Telegraph’ personalised news service as the foundation for a social networking platform around the event. The Telegraph Media Group rolled out My Telegraph in May, which enables registered users to save Continue Reading…

I’ve been out and about, looking for developers, and lately focussed on Dev forums and open outsourcing sites. Open outsourcing is a matchmaking service for Developers. You, the client scope out the job and Developers pitch to build it for you. The interface is sort of Auction House-y or Ebay-ish. There’s escrow and warranties and all sorts of goodies to protect the buyer and seller, oops, I mean developer and client. Initially rentacoder took the honour as the one most known, and you could have flash or html websites built. But now the matchmaking service is for lots of different Continue Reading…
