Twenty four hours for shock and disbelief and hugging around the virtual campfire. Then the jokes start: Steve Irwin jokes:Steve Irwin wouldn’t have died had he been wearing sunscreen – it would’ve protected him from the harmful rays. The song played at Steve’s funeral will be “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” by Sting. Steve arrives at the pearly gates and sees St Peter.”Crikey,” he says, “Look at the wings on you! Massive!”St Peter proceeds to ask him his name, address, date of birth and all that jazz.He punches the data in the heaven computer and suddenly an alarm sounds.”Oh Continue Reading…
Ah yes. User Generated Content. If you are a site developer, no doubt you’ve had new converts to Web2.0 rush in and say “OMG build me a website that revolves around my customer, with a content management system that allows both my company employees AND the consumer to add heaps of stuff content. Y’know *makes quotation marks in the air with fingers* User Generated Content. About this time a year ago I applied for a job at eBay Australia. I figured I’d have a good chance at it, having implemented US -centric initiatives into other theatres (Europe, Asia etc) for major technology companies in the past. Today’s article in The Australian Fee Rise Hits eBay Minnnows by Simon Hayes outlines some of the challenges facing eBay and Continue Reading…

When Australia lost the Crocodile Hunter a couple of hours ago, shock reverberated around the ‘net. Intriguingly, I expected Guestbooks to be up with the half hour. What I did find was the comment section of The Courier Mail performing that task. Tragic Loss of An Aussie Icon. Unfortunately, because they moderate every comment I doubt they will have the infrastructure to provide a proper, responsive, memorial guest book service for Steve Irwin to the world. But if you do operate a traditional media/online paper, consider having guestbook infrastructure ready. Its a way to open dialogue between people who want Continue Reading…

Some time ago I wrote about digital graveyards Diaries of the Dead – a Forgotten Babyon – the email addresses, blogs and online presences that continue long after their creator has passed from the real world. I speculated that these pixel ghosts would soon outnumber their flesh-and-blood counterparts. Well its seems there is now a burgeoning industry in taking care of afterlife business. J. Scott Orr’s article in The Times Picayune “The digital afterlife goes on … and on” says: “We need to increase awareness of the way we leave digital traces and then try to take an active role Continue Reading…
